I have started a Frame of on my Chevelle ss. I have a question about the muncie trans which I find very odd. The car has the matching number Engine, rear, intake, carb, alternator and has been verified with no problem. The Muncie is supposed to be original M20 It is fine spline and has the big yoke. It has no vin number stamped on the case like My past chevelles. Only numbers stamped on the case are CC2 35636. I have no Idea what this means the casting Numbers are correct for the car which Is A 1972 chevelle built Nov of 71. the casting are as follows
Case 32925661 and has the drain plugs
Tail 3978764
Side cover 3952648
Anybody that can help out i would appreciate it.

DZ is correct but it would be interesting to know if the number stamped on the case matches your vin. Anyone knowwhat CC stands for? Chevrolet replacement engines are stamped CE for Cheverolet engine but I'm not sure if the first C is Chevy or not. Chevy Case maybe??? The last diget is the model year of the car.

ZL14ME:wacko:

GOOD POINT!
I'm not sure what the difference is in a stamp for just a bare case and a stamp for a complete tranny.
I just know that code is for a replacement. About all there is to go by for a replacement case or tranny is the casting numbers (325, 010, 660, 661, etc). And I don't think I've ever seen a replacement 325 or 010 case/tranny.
You so seldom see replacement Muncie cases/trannys and as a result there are not enough of them out there to provide the needed data for determining which is what.
I remember the day (about 40yrs ago) when you could go to any Chevy parts dept and buy either an M20, M21, M22 for about $375. A bare bones case was about $40 and a new cluster gear was about $85.
Oh ya, and a 70 SS454 was about $4500!!!

I thought service replacement transmissions were stamped CT followed by the year and a sequential number.

CC2 stands for "counter case" put into the parts system in the 1972 calender year...
CT2 stands for "counter trans" put into the parts system in the 1972 calender year...
CC9thru4 would be a main case in a box sold over the parts counter...
CT8thru4 would be a complete trans in a box sold over the parts counter...
I have several examples of these, some still in the GM boxes... Crash

Thanks for the info guys. So am I to asume the case was replaced under warranty. This car is matching numbers down to the carb . This is a documented car with buildsheet, window sticker, shipping papers, hand written dealer forms/estimates, PDI forms ect. This is the only item not checking out. Like I said before there is no vin# just the letters discussed above on the case.
Thanks to all who replied with info on this matter. Now if I can just find The big block heat stove needed I'll be in good shape for the resto.

There is NO WAY to know after all these years why your tranny case was replaced. It could have been replaced under warranty or an owner could have replaced it after he blew up some gears and busted the case. Thus, it may have some replacement guts as well as a replaced case. Who knows?????????
Just be thankful your car has all of the other parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hurray:
