Okay i bought a 396 engine i think from what i was told came out of a 66 chevelle.i searched and tried to id the engine so i need some help.the code by distributor is 385592. the engine code by water pump on the block deck is t022IIvr and the heads say 6272292 from what i can tell i may have a 396 block with 402 heads any help is appreciated. i tried to install and crank engine but nothing.i did a compression check and came up with about 90 psi!!any thoughts on this was 800 dollars to much. i got ripped cause it was supposed to be a good motor but i know how these games work so im not too dissapointed.

IV = 65,66,67,68 396 full size car 325 L-35 TH-400 4-Brl
The R designated a Rochester carb and was used in 66 only.

Be careful if you do any work to this block as 65 & 66 needed a grooved rear cam journal and grooved rear cam bearing to correctly supply oil to the top end.

6272292 402/454 71 2.06/1.77 Open chamber Oval port

Block is likely 3855962 396 65-66 4-Bolt
See if you can get the other numbers from the block and heads

all the numbers on the block say it a 396 but the heads have me spun?was it common practice to put 402 heads on a 396? the only numbers i can see other then 3855962 on pass side by distributor, t022IIVR on deck and i think a partial vin d165556. so basic question is should i try to get 396 heads?this setup is going into a 75 1 ton c30 tow truck so torque is a concern not horses or high rpm.this thing has some domed pistons in it that look like it might have a high cr!i want to spend least as possible to get the compression back up.basically a re ring? thanks for your help mike!!

Do you have the heads off?
Number off the piston top?
Dome should be .201" if those are stock pistons.
From NHRA:
325 396 .008 Dome .201" 22.04 cc
Heads look to have 105 cc chambers per NHRA but that's minimum.
So that's about 9.5 to 9.75 cr
You should get those heads cc'd as they did vary in cc's

they must be replacement slugs cause they dont have any numbers on them looks to have a pretty big dome on it. thanks for all your replies i have too find out where im going with this and get it done for the least amount of money. cylinders still have the crosshatch in them and barely any ridge i just dont wanna throw head gaskets on it again and get the same results. anyway to check the rings with heads off prior to this i did a compression test and came up with about 90 across the board.?any thoughts would help
