So I am new to the Chevy world; I have been working on VWs. For my first engine I got a '71 402 that I plan to run in a '68 SS Clone. How close to the '68 396 can I get this engine to look? Can I/Should I run '68 brackets for the alternator and everything? Also...

What gets orange paint for a stock '68 396? Heads and Block for sure but what about Intake Manifold, water pump, harmonic balancer?

Also... I was told that stock chrome '68 BB valve covers only have one hole each. Where can I find repros that are correct?

Finally... What would I need to replace to turn this '71 lowered decomp. 402 to match the 1970 402/375hp L78's performance?

Thanks!

PS If interested I would love to swap my 68 columnshift column for a floorshift and a flexplate for a flywheel!

Pretty hard to tell the difference from 1 396 to the next unless it as alum heads. If you really want it to look correct then you need to replace the alt brackets, etc. But it will look ok and most people won't know the difference if you leave as is. If you replace the brackets let me know I could use the 71 bracket.

Everything get's painted, block, heads, water pump, balancer, intake unless it's alum. Chevy Red-Orange, NOT Chevy orange.

Check the suppliers, for valve covers, Ground-Up, YearOne, NPD, etc.

Raise compression, heads, pistons. I'll let the engine pros provide more details on that one.

Good luck, big blocks are fun.
