Looking for best cam upgrade option for this motor if I went this route
Any ideas?

Just wondering if anyone has tried using one of these crate motors and installing a bigger care to make more horsepower? Seems like a pretty reasonable way to go. You guises thoughts? GM Goodwrench 1996-2000 Truck 350ci/255HP 5.7L Engine

Electric fuel pump doesn't bother me. I was thinking of using this motor in my 63 C10 with 700R4 and 3:42 posi (will be used as a somewhat weekend cruiser and occasionally daily driver.
The price for a new GM roller motor got my attention and I would just like to know how to get some more power out of it without removing the heads. (thought a bigger cam would be way to go)
Am I on the right track?

If its going in a 63, why not got with the 1500 dollar 260hp base motor and drop a cam kit in it. It seems the only difference between the 260hp and 290hp motor is the size of the cam. Granted you dont get the vortex heads but you dont need a different intake, its got the classic two piece rear main and flex plate, and a mechanical fuel pump. Lastly the standard valve covers too. What you can do is to use the motor as it comes with the factory hyd roller cam. These motors move a 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive around with out much of a problem. The truck you are putting it in is a lot heaver then you think it is. TQ is your friend with a heavy vehicle. Its those vortec heads that are making the power. You could install a set of 1.6 self aliening rockers for a little more lift on the cam with out changing the springs or any thing else.
