Take a measurement from the rear wheel stud or a good reference point on the axle housing to a mounting point on the frame- maybe the transmission crossmember mounting hole and compare from side to side. You can measure at different reference points all along the frame to determine if the rearend is out of alignment with the frame or if this is a front suspension alignment problem. The front suspension can be measured this way as well from the lower balljoint back to the frame at different points. The measurements should be the same side to side =or- 1/8". Taking measurements off of suspension parts can be tricky though- the suspension needs to be at the same travel point from side to side. Leveling the frame on jack stands placed under each torquebox will help equalize the suspension from side to side. level ground also helps. A wheelbase measurement of +or- 1/8" would be very good, 1/4" would still be acceptable on most of these old cars, 1/2" is more than what I would want.
