Here is my dilemma. I currently have flowmaster 40 series on my 68 Camaro. (496, solid roller, 3 inch exhaust the whole way out to right behind the rear tires-factory location, about 600 hp). I like the flowmasters ok, but am looking for a different sound. So I ordered a pair of the Dynomax 3" Ultra Flows (14 inch case) and will be getting them tomorrow. I've done a lot of reading on here and am not sure what to do. Its hard to find a decent sound clip, and I sure don't want them to be too quiet. I like some rumble. I like the decibel level of my flowmasters, but not really nuts about the sound. One person says the the Ultra Flows sound awesome, then the next says they are quiet. I don't want to sneak around the neigborhood. I want a good, tough idle. Some say you here more of the motor with the Ultaflows? What do you all think? I don't want to take the flowmasters off and then like the Dynomax even less! Thanks.

i run 3" ultraflows on my 454 and i love the sound. it's rumbly, not snappy. they take a week or so to break-in a bit, so if you do swap, give them a chance before you decide if you like them or not. when i had mine done, i went from manifolds and dual 2 1/2" Race Magnums ( similar to ultraflows ), to headers and 3" w/ an X pipe. I was pissed for the first few days because they were too quiet and wondering if i should have gone with the flowmasters. but after a week or so, they started to get throatier and louder and after a while, when you step on the go pedal, people know you're coming.

Yeah, I got the Ultra Flow welded Race Magnums part #17221. I called Dynomax and they said they are the same muffler, but Jegs sells the Ultra flow and then the ultra flow race magnum, which I bought. So I figured they would be a little louder than the "standard" ultraflow, but I guess it is the same muffler? Kind of confusing. Anyway my motor has about 600 hp and I want it to sound like it! I figured these would "burn out" and get louder as time goes on.

yeah that's exactly it. i ran them with my 425 hp 454 and really liked the sound. not so loud as to draw attention from Johnny Law when you're cruisin', but when you mat it everybody knows what's going on under the hood. haven't had it running much this year, having troubles with my 454 to 496 conversion. hoping to fire up next week and hear the sweet music with 42 extra cubes and a whole bunch more ponies. i'm sure you'll like the tone once they start breaking in.

The 14" case Ultraflo's will not be quiet, especially with 496ci feeding them.

They will probably be much quieter than your current Flowmasters during cruise and steady throttle conditions but will likely be louder than the Flowmasters under WOT-- that was my experience going from 50-series Flowmasters to 14" case Ultraflo's.

Also, the Ultraflo's will not burn out. I recently changed mine out for big-cased Magnaflows (after exploding and cracking the cases on my Ultraflos) and even several years later after lots of abuse all the packing material was still in the cases and in very good condition.

I had Spintechs Pro Street on a few months ago with dumps and they sounded really mean, but just too loud. People would move their cars either ahead or behind me at stop lights! I know a guy who has a pretty stout 454 chevelle with the Goerlich Xlerators on and it sounds AWESOME! I figured these Ultraflows are very similar in size, shape, design, etc. so I hope they sound similar. I really don't care for a cackle-glass pack sound, so that is one of my concerns with these mufflers, being that there is fiberglass packing in them.

no cackle-glass pack sound from the ultraflows. i run Xlerators on my 94 1500 4x4 work truck and i wish i would have put ultras on it too. it has more of a snappier sound to it, less rumble. on the flip, i guess it is also unrealistic to expect a fairly stock fuely 350 to sound like a cammed-up BBC.

I have 3" Ultraflows behind my 468..Like everyone has said...the sound at idle and just off isn't obnoxious, it's a nice mellow tone ...but when you lean into the loud pedal they sound mean!

I think you'll live the ultra flows. I had FM's first, didnt like them for the same reasons as you. I even tried Hooker Aerochambers, but ran them one year, and now the UltraFlows are back on again! I love the sound. Mine is a 505, and I can tell you they're not quiet....but they're not the same loud as the flowmasters...it's a much nicer sound. Very deep and a nice rumble. No tinny or glass pak sound at all, at any speed. Give them a try, Im sure you'll be happy. I sent you a short clip to your email. Of course every car and installation may sound a bit different, but it should give you some idea. John

Johnny O, I didn't get the sound clip you sent me. Could you please send it again? I have to make a decision by tomorrow cuz I have an appointment at the muffler shop. Man I wish I new someone around here who had the ultraflows on, but everyone seems to use flowmaster. Keep the opinions coming please!

The ultra flows are awsome. I just went through the same thing with my 355. I hated the flowmaster tiny sound. The ultraflows are almost just as loud at idle but under cruise and highway speed they are queiter, but under wot they sound awsome. I can tell you, you won't be disappointed with the ultraflows.

Do any of you guys have any sound clips you can send me? I feel a little better now after reading all the posts. I just didn't want my car to sound like a stock 5.0 Mustang at idle. I do like some "wickedness" at idle. Its a fender shaker now as is, so I can't imagine these Ultra flows would make it too quiet. Also, does anyone know decibel-wise the difference between Flowmaster 40 series and Ultra Flow welded? Thanks all!

Ok, so I got my new Ultraflows today. They are heavier than my flowmasters. Quality and construction appears very good. They are definately straight through with a huge tube going from one end to the other!! Hard to imagine they would keep anything that quiet (especially the 3" ones I got)! I'm having them installed tomorrow, so I hope I like them. They guy putting them on said he has them on his '61 Impala with a 409 and says they sound pretty nasty, so I'm getting anxious!

If you're interested in something a touch louder than ultraflows, but a lot quieter than flowmaster, I like the Pypes setups. I have the 18" streetpro's on mine.

Sound clip here: http://www.pypesexhaust.com/sounds-gm-abody.html
Mine is the 70 SS under the "street pro" section.

That sounds pretty close to what I'm looking for. What motor do you have? I have a pretty healthy 496 so I can't wait to hear mine! Are those mufflers chambered or straight through or what?

i had them same mufflers on my 69 camaro with a 383 and a mini blower and it was 3 inch all the way out back at first it was somewhat quiet until the packing inside got burned in and then i had that glass pack kackle and it was so loud that the local pd in this snobby lil town i live in jacked me twice so i had them removed and ran the axcelerators like the ones you mentioned on that chevelle and it was a nice tight deep throaty rumble and the sound police never bothered me again. let me know what you find as i to am tired of the trashmaster sound LOL i mean flowmaster sound i currently have 3 inch into delta flows with dumps as my new current suspension wont allow room for full out the back exhaust and its kinda way crisp a lil to much that early this summer whan i was driving around my neighborhood a lil bit one of my neighbors complained that it made dishes in there china cabinet rattle so im lookin for a bit of a change myself also.

When you say you had the same mufflers, are you talking about the Ultra flows? A lot of people have told me that they don't have much of a glasspack sound to them, but if they do, they are gone
