I'm planning on short filling my current project to the bottom of the frost plugs (.100 over BBC). I see the stuff Summit sells for this, but I'm finding it hard to swallow the $70 after shipping.

Question is, can I just use some good ole' portland cement for this? I've heard of others having good results with this....

What do ya think?

Chris,
I have never tried using anything but Hard Block & Moroso's Block fill.
Neither are just cement.

Consider what it will cost you if it doesn't work compared to the $70 ;)
Also if this is a street car at all you will probably need an oil cooler.

Ever think about what Portland cement is?

It's lime.

Go take a piece of iron or steel, and put it in a damp place where there's lime sometime, and watch what happens to it.

You need something that's inert, and will stay put; something that won't dissolve in anit-freeze or whatever other chemicals are in the cooling system, and won't chip away during heat/cool expansion cycles, and so on.

WHat people do to a junkyard clock that only has to last a couple of qualifying laps and a couple of 10-lap heats and and a 30-lap feature around a ÂĽ-mile dirt track, before they throw it away and get another junkyard block for next weekend's race, doesn't always apply very well to a street or even a drag race car that you want to last a few seasons.

Chris,
Use the Hard Block. I have even had problems with the other major brand of block filler. One suggestions ... for the slight difference in price .. get the Tall Fill bucket instead of the short fill. The short fill is just barely enough to half fill a small block. The Tall Fill will be more than enough.
