Tune up?

Check the spark plugs and verify ignition timing. That's where I would look first.

 

Check carb for wide open throttle as well.

 

Check valve springs after you have looked at the above first. If still a problem - See if any are broken and or if they have lost pressure. If flat tappet cam maybe also look and see if things are moving like they are supposed to (wiped cam lobe).

 

Points and condenser always brought the power back in my 71.

 

Start with the basics. Do a tune up and if you have a problem you should be able to discover what it is during your tune up.

 

Start cold use your infrared temp gun and check each header temp. On a small block move down 2-3" from the flange as the middle 2 are very close.

 

In addition to what others have said, check Fuel pressure. Choke opening all the way. Fuel bowl levels.

 

thinking about switching over from Edelbrock to a Holley. See original post for engine set up. What do you think would be the best fit for my set up?

Holley would be better for performance.

 

Might not need anything IF distributor moved!
I'd check all above before spending anything.
