Hello,
I have a '67 chevelle with a sb 400, 350 trans, HEI ignition, hooker headers, alternator with internal voltage regulator, new ignition switch, new starter, new ring gear.
Seems that every time I take the car out, it does something strange to me. Couple of weeks ago, the fuel pump (mechanical) was puking out gasoline...replaced. The starter always sounded raspy. Last week my son came over and I took him for a ride. Went to start the car after driveing it and the starter wouldn't engage. Grabbed the fan, turned the engine a little and luckilly the starter did engage. Left it running while we stopped by an auto parts store for shims. Got that fixed.
Today, I took it for a drive and it wouldn't shut off with the key. 1st time that's ever happened to me. Went into a store and left it running with the key out. Put the key back in, turned it to the run position and drove it home. Turned the key to the off position, it still kept running. Switched on and off a bunch of times, kept running. Popped the hood and tapped on the solinoid. No difference. As I was getting ready to unplug the distributor, it stopped on it's own. Turned it on and off a few times and it worked as it should every time. The previous owner told me he put in a new ignition switch and that didn't fix his probem. He didn't say what the original problem was but I assume this is it. He didn't say he never found the problem. What do you guys think?
I did use the search feature and found a number of posts regarding similar issues, but didn't see any intermittant problems where the ignition switch was eliminated (probably) as the cause.
BTW, I'm not annoyed by any of that. Love chevelle's, always have, always will.
Thanks
