I ran an HEI on my race car for years, but I was only using the pickup coil to trigger my MSD 6A at the time. Only reason I took out the HEI was my MSD billet distributor had 0 spark scatter with my timing light on it vs the HEI. Since you already have the HEI, just ditch the module, and add the 6AL but put a new factory module in the HEI and leave it disconnected in case your 6A ever fails. I had the wring harness in my glove box if I was ever stranded on the road, kind of like the old Mopar deal with the ballast resistor, you always carried a spare to keep from being stranded on the road.

MSD 6AL does not equal dependable! Like others have said, brand name module, right grease, and you might want to try a new coil.
Are you sure about that statement? I have a 6A on one of my cars that I put on in 1979. I think that's pretty reliable:unsure:

typical no data opinion maybe? Gosh is this politics now? My MSD 6AL did crap out after 12 years, lost a Cap. Dave Ray thought it was due to a crappy coil. Maybe. sent it to TX and they sent it back mint.
MSD says you should not put the box where there's too much heat, like under the hood. Well my old one has been under the hood of 2 cars for decades and never failed. I also have 4 other 6-AL boxes and they all work great. In my race car if the 7AL2 ever fails I have a 6AL ready to go on the firewall inside the car, I call it cheap insurance.
