I have Windows XP home with IE7 and recently the browser shuts down when I try to look at a web site or a news article online. I have seen this once in a while in recent months, but today it has become chronic. For example, I went to a news article in an out of state newpaper; it loaded ok and stayed on the montitor for several seconds, then the browser shut down, leaving me looking at the desktop icons. I am looking for suggestions as to what to do next.Temporary internet files were deleted, browsing history is cleared and most of the cookies were removed. I have re-booted and run a full virus scan, but still have the problem, which seems to not affects all the places I visit. Team Chevelle seems ok so far.

What shows up in 'event viewer'?

can you reproduced it everytime by going to the same website?

It has been sporadic and once in a while it gives an error message. Just a few minutes ago, it gave this message: "internet explorer is having problems with an add-on." The add-on it showed was this one: hpswp.BHO.dll
If I recall properly , it gave a similar message for some other software, like maybe Flash.

Firefox won't fix a registry error as the article suggests and isn't a fix-all solution for what ails your PC. :noway:
I don't know if Ccleaner would fix it but it has the ability to highlight and repair registry errors. I use UniBlue Registry Booster to find and fix registry problems more often than Ccleaner and it seems to work fine.
If you don't use HP's smart web printing you might be able to uninstall the feature or at least disable it I would think.

Why not upgrade to IE8? Also make sure you have all current Windows Updates installed. That will most likely solve all of your issues...
Seems to be OK now. I deleted most of the HP printer stuff (not all of it could be removed!) , got the latest upgrades for the OS and got IE8. I will re-install a small amount of the HP bloat and see if the printer functions. Hp Imagezone Express refuses to uninstall for some reason.
