Hi the reason I need to replace my rings is detonation ( I think ) really not sure
Heres what I have, 1969 396 30 over all roller making around 550 hp.
At the very top of the rpm curve the engine breaks down very badly, almost like it starts missing a few cylinders. It starts popping back through the carb but as soon as I shift or back off the peddle the beast is back. after chasing this all summer by changing or adjusting anything that had something to do with the timing I could not get out of the problem. Can fuel cause this? I am running 93 oct. Should I retard the cam? near the end of the summer I started seeing smoke
from the right side I believe I broke a ring or two.

Ok have and update but first lets answer some of the question about the motor
cam is a edelbrock 2261 @50 236 / 245
comp is about 10.75:1
heads are edelrock alum. 6045
It's not a back firing type of sound I hear more of a popping like i am hitting the rev limiter but not that high on the rpm's to really hit the limiter I am starting to
valves as well. never really thought about that until you guys mention it. So I call edelbrock and they told me to change my springs Thanks guys.

yup best pull on dyno was 548 after carb swap at 6500 rpm all I can think of was that it was all new and tight got worse as the summer got longer. I am going with floating and ordering new springs as per edelbrock. thank again
