Defected Intake from Summit

I bought a Edelbrock RPM for my BB a few days ago from Summit, and just installed it last night. The Distributor would not fit after the install without leaning way to the right toward the driver fender, and also fit so tight because of the off-set hole, it would not even spin without force.
I call Summit at 8.20 pm last night to explain to them the defected Intake, and they agreed to send out another one today by way of NEXT DAY AIR SAT DELIVERY. Even tho this is a bad thing on Edelbrocks QC department, Summit went the extra mile to fix it on there end.

Summit customer service does kick butt. I really think this is the main challenge for local speed shops, which will typically not do a 1-day Sat delivery to replace a defective part.

I do find it odd for an Edelbrock RPM to have this problem, since I can't imagine how their quality control and manufacturing tolerances would let the dizzy hole on 1 intake get so far off. Are you sure the oil pump sleeve was fully on the pump and/or is straight?

Summit has excellent customer satisfaction,I've been having some issues with some defective parts I got for a front brake upgrade on my '86 Monte, and they have replaced these parts ASAP.This service will keep me buying from Summit in the future.I too had a defective Edelbrock part,(sort of),a Russell brake hose was poorly manufactured and wouldnt seat properly.Russell is part of the Edelbrock group.I phoned Edelbrock to comment on this, they havent retuened my call.:(

In fairness to our sponsors, I cant say what i do for a living, but it involves dealing with Summit and a few other companies on a daily basis.
Summit has always been TOP NOTCH in the customer service dept! ANY issues at all, and a new part is here, usually the next day, along with a call tag for the bad part.
Comp cams is also VERY good to deal with...if you can get through to them. had issues with a defective roller lifter that had been ordered a YEAR before and sat on the shelf....they exchanged it NO hassle! I also asked them for a couple banners to hang up and they sent a BOX of banners, decals, a clock, and hats. Love them guys!
Crane cams sent out a PAIR of replacement pushrods and adjusters...for FREE, for my old Harley when one broke.......I wasnt even the original buyer.
And Crower....Dave and Jerry flat out ROCK when it comes to tech help, and they spend as much time on the phone as it takes......just be sure you know what youre talking about when you call em LOL.

I'm actually rather shocked that your intake could be that far out of wack. I don't know your experience level, but I'll assume you've got the problem narrowed down to a problem with the casting. That's pretty wacky. Can you post up a couple pics before you send it back to Summit?

Some years ago, when Lunati first came out with the Voodoo cams, a friend bought a Voodoo cam from Summit. It was one of the "soft" cam cores and wiped right away. Lunati told him he must have botched the installation and wouldn't do anything for him. Summit told him they had a lot of the same complaints at that time and swapped his wiped cam for a completely different cam.

lol,,,,
I would like to think I am pretty inclined here.
Several things are aparent.
1. When looking at the molded area where the hole is cut for the Dist, the hole is cut off to one side, NOT the center of the mold.
2. The Dist leans over to the driver fender.
3. When the dist is fully inserted, it has a bad drag when rotating.
4. The Dist cap lock downs will hit one of the hole bosses molded in the intake when rotated.

1) it's not supposed to be in the center, never was.

2) yes, the distributor leans to the drivers side, it always has. if you look carefully you'll see that the gasket seating pad is angled to the distributor seats properly while angled to the drivers side.

3) is there a camshaft or oil pump in the engine? what exactly are you doing here?

4) if the distributor is dropped correctly the hold down bosses don't hit the manifold. It's not expected that you can spin the whole distributor around in the block.

5) how long you been doing this?

[EDIT]

6) I think you should edit the title of your post to reflect the reality of the situation.

You are little harsh, and speak to quick.
I did a simple intake swap,,,,,,,,,, and done MANY in my lifetime.
The distributor does not drop in this intake with ease,,,,,, and it IS forced to one side.
This is a running motor that was built about 1000 miles ago, and I just decided to update the intake.
Also,,,,
Summit, while I was on the phone with them called (someone, somewhere) that they refered to as a tech, and he ask a few questions and had me messure a few things.
He also ssaid there was a problem somewhere.
NOW,,,,,,
As far as changing the name of the post,,,,,,,,,,,
Did you, or anyone see this post as a BASHING to anybody? It was/is just a heads up.

I did not even mention the fact that when the motor was running, I it had OIL leaking from the distributor gasket because it did not cover the hole on one side.

I don't know, is it really out of the realm of possibilities that there was in fact a defective part, and what Mark the OP is claiming is actually the case?

Seems to me the op's main objective is to say that he had a good customer service experience, which is nice because to often we hear things are bad and a company is not taking care of an issue. Mark, good luck hopefully the replacement intake is problem free. :beers:

Are you sure you got the intake installed on the engine square? I once got one off to the side enough that caused problems with dropping in the distributor. A good realignment of the manifold to seat it properly and the distributor dropped right in like it should. Same manifold, same engine, same bolts.

I'd like to see some side by side comparison photos of both manifolds when you get the new manifold.

I won't bash their name but another company about two years ago wouldn't exchange my cam and lifter combo and even went to the point of accusing me of "not buying" it. They wouldn't say the word steal it. I was in the middle of moving and couldn't find my receipt. I just wanted to exchange it. Sent it back with price difference, etc... finally found my receipt.

the aftermarket parts business is small potatoes to Edelbrock. they won't go away until there are no oem car, truck, motorcycle, atv, or personal watercraft manufacturers in business..
so it might be a year or two.

Rich,
Im sure anything is possible, but a intake install is pretty much a walk in the park. The front of the intake is seated perfect, Im pretty sure the back is as well.
We have pretty much astablished the hole is cut oblong.
Once again,
I am kind sorry that I posted this small issue, it seems some have taken it to beat up on venders, or mistaken myself to bad mouth a vender, which is not the case.
Sometimes, a few people forget what a forum is about, and also a few others will never appreciate a good forum and it's benifits.
