I have a problem I haven driven my 68chevelle in a while took it for a ride everything was good shut it off went to restart it it starts fine no problems but I noticed the gen light(red light) stays on after started and the gas guage is showing pretty much empty which I know it is not its probobly on 3/4 tank this happened a while back but it was a blown fuse I think it was the guages fuse? but I checked all the fuses and somwhat the wiring under the dash and hood and everything seems tight so im not sure. I needed to drive the car friday to get the car detailed I was planning on going to florida with it this weekend does anyone have any ideas or where to start looking I am going to go get a voltage regulator just for the hell of it since it is still original at least original looking and start with that. anybody?

If the gen light is on with the engine running, it is an indication that the charging system is not working.
Does the light come on with the key in the on position, but engine not running?
Take a voltage reading at the Battery terminal of the alternator. With the engine at moderate rpm you should have 13 to 14 volts give or take some. If it is not charging, there is a way to put the alternator in the full output mode. On the rear of the alternator is a D shaped test hole. Connect your voltmeter to the output and stick a small phillip screwdriver blade in the test hole and the alternator if good will go to full output.
You need to get more information by running test before you start throwing money and parts at her.
There is a even money chance that the fuel gauge and the alternator light are two separate problems. I would concentrate on the alternator, you can still drive it without a fuel gauge, but you won't get very far without a charging system.

swcash thanks, I just ran and got a voltage regulator put it on and my light went out and the gauges seem to be working so I put the old one back on just to verify and the light came on and the fuel guage didnt work so I am keeping my fingers crossed I think the regulator fixed it.

Excellent. I wonder what the connection is between the two.
