i used this style, mostly because i knew i was going to be taking the cover off again shortly. no RTV. not a drip. This one is for a Dana 60, but im sure they have them for a 12 bolt.

I like it Tom! Yet, frankly, the way I beat the snot outta my stuff, well, that's why its called an INSPECTION COVER. I need to use it and am just about to after my last long jaunt ( 1000 mile+) of the season and switching over to some "fall air" track runs. Pull cover. Inspect. Check TQ. Seal. Fill. (Last time I found some shims trying to wrangle their way Still think it needs more side thrust. Will find out shortly.

Sort of foolish there isnt a drain, as all the foreign built azzes I've lubed had them. DOH!

But some of us fools need to open that inspection cover once in a bit anyhow !

Aviation gasket cement non hardening
Loctite
Permatex

This will never break down , it will stop even very minor oil fume leaks . Work best on paper style gaskets .
I have used this stuff for 35 years never a problem .

Silicon/ RTV used on the corners of a rubber gasket or where ever the factory recommends but NOT on a paper gasket

I use a very light smear of RTV on both side of a gasket. A drain is nice but I would still pull the cover to spray clean everything.

I just recently did the service on my 12 bolt posi rear. I used the LubeLocker Differential Cover Gasket LLR-G12C. No sealant necessary, just cleaned it off really well on both the cover side and the diff side, easy installation and no leak so far. I used the ACDelco posi-additive with non-synthetic Valvoline gear oil, so far so good.

Finished it up today and gasket plus a little RTV worked great. A couple of observations from a newbie, a drill wire brush attachment was a life saver at removing the old gasket. secondly, gear oil is not the best smelling stuff. The old stuff smelled pretty foul but looked ok

Installed oil , in the modern era has a far shorter life . Especially if it has additives or semi or full synthetic .
Normal service life is 60,000 miles . Severe service life is 30,000miles
Time period based service 10yrs
Exceeding that oil degrades and absorbs moisture eventually .

ALL OIL suffers especially in long term storage or very low usage
RE if oil is not heated it does not get hot enough to expel moisture

All old gear oil smells bad but new oil is similar to plant nectar . New oil far easier on the nose

hi
Remember silicon /RTV is a surface sealant does not penetrate the gasket ,its not designed to .
U never find silicon on Factory OEM modern gasket . Many are sprayed with gasket cement prior to install at factory . Some gaskets have it pre applied during there manufacture .

Old school GM gasket glue [liquid thin honey ][used for wet head bolt sealing as well ] and other branded non hardening cement does . This type of applied to paper gasket sealants are far far better in the long term .
