On my 70 Chevelle, there are 2 brackets that sit on the frame to hold the ends of the transmission crossmember in place. Which way do the brackets go? One side of the bracket has a lip all the way across, the other side has a gap in the middle, which way do they go? Is there supposed to be a piece of rubber in there somewhere?
Its been a long time since I took this thing apart, of course I was way too smart to take pictures or to write things down.
Thanks
Ron

Ron,
you have a 70-72 monte carlo crossmember there, the chevelle crossmember does not use mounts. The monte uses rubber insulators on each end, with the bracket covering the rubber and bolting to the frame. The chevelle crossmember just bolts up, no extra parts. I would toss that crossmember and get the right one.

Huh, thats interesting Dave. This is the crossmember that was in the car when I bought it, the rubber that it had in it was pieces of a tire that were cut into rectangles. I guess I better look for another one.
Thanks.

Sounds like a Pontiac crossmember. The Montes I've seen were bolt-in.
Regardless, a bolt-in Chevelle crossmember would be what you want.
Also for your balancer clearence issue, check the trans mount to make sure it's not too tall.

The trans mount that I have is a new one from Year One (could'nt find one locally) It's supposed to fit all except Auto. It looks like others I've used but I dont know how tall it's supposed to be.
Anyone have one they can measure the height of?

Definately a 70-72 monte crossmember, every one I have had used the rubber insulator/bracket setup. I just measured a trans mount on a 454/th350 setup I pulled from a 71 monte a few days ago, and the mount looks to be the same size as any one I have used. The rubber insulator is 1 1/2" thick.
