Bought 2 5.3's and craigslist rant

I'm just gonna double this post up so my "drama" level will be lower.....

For the last 2 weeks I have been setting up a deal to buy 2 5.3's from a salvage yard that my neighbor and his son know. I had thought everything was settled. we agreed on a price and that I'd be there to pick them up today.
I stopped by the yard yesterday to let them know I'd be in today and to see what time they'd be ready for pick up...... they didn't have them pulled yet and the employee's were being wishy washy and vague about the whole deal.
I go to the yard today about 3:00 and when I get there, they say the engine's aren't pulled and that the owner doesn't like the price that he agreed on and that I will need to renegotiate with the owner..... these engines are missing the starters and injectors, are not known to run and were bought from the police auction (they were in City of Flint Tahoe patrol units). Now, I've been to the auctions before and I have seen this guy buy Tahoe's for as little as $150.00 but as much as $500.00. I offered him $250.00 per engine and that was the agreed upon price before the renege. I was, to put it mildly, upset. I go next door to a different yard, get a 5.3 fully dressed and known to run, and a almost dressed 5.3 that they didn't know if it ran or not as well as a passenger side window for my '98 Chevy truck (the guide on the window rusted out) for $50.00 less than the other guy who pimped me so it all came out good :hurray:  Time to clean them up

Now, I know why everyone complains about Craigslist..... as a buyer I have had little to no problem with it, as a seller........

I have a '98 mustang I'm trying to sell (California car) and even though the ad states that it does not run, I have received about 5 calls with people asking "Do it run"..... Do it run? WTF, does you read? 'cause no, it do-ant run

So anyway, no luck selling it so I am starting to strip it to try and e-bay / craigslist some parts and scrap the rest. I get a text asking if it's got a clean title and if I'd be interested in selling the frame. "Frame?" I asked "do you mean the unibody?" So, OK, he is good with that and asks me for a price. I ask what he thinks a unibody consists of, and I told him my definition is floor, roof, trunk and engine compartment structures as well as the quarters but no hood, doors, deck lid, fenders, interior or suspension (or wiring, glass etc, but I wasn't going to strip all that out) and I gave him a price for my definition. He says "OK, send pics" so I spend the next 45 minutes crawling around and under the car sending pics. He mentions how nice the doors are and I said "Tell you what, give me $200.00 more than what I want for the unibody and you can have the whole car, give me another $100.00 and I'll deliver it to your front door with a bow on it (it's about a 130 mile round trip... in a 3/4 ton, extended cab, long box, 4x4) he tells me he can't afford that so, OK....... I ask him if he has a trailer because we'll need to figure out how to load it and he said no, so my curiosity got the best of me, I texted back to him, "so how are you going to get this back home?" he says that he has a tow strap and he's going to tow it behind his truck....... ...... I tell him he can't because he'll grind the body away dragging it on the ground so he says "no, it'll have the wheels on it"..... I then, again, ask what he thinks a unibody / frame is and he responds "everything except the engine and transmission"..........:noway: ............ I am kinda pizzed by now so I ask him to reread my text explaining to him what a unibody is and what he is getting for the quoted price because what he wants is a car without an engine and transmission, not the unibody. I said i'd let my offer of price and delivery stand if he wanted a car with no engine and transmission but that i'd throw in the engine and transmission for that price (if all I had to do was load and go I was willing to take less just so a car this clean wouldn't get scrapped).......

So, if you've made it this far, what do you consider a "frame / unibody"?

Same issues with CL

Noone reads the ad no matter how explicit you are they are dumber or play it anyway. If I cant ebay the part I just throw them out now its just not worth it.
I tried posting it in Detroit area because up here, when you say "Foreign car", you're really just talking about a Ford or Chrysler product :D

I'll not make that mistake again :noway:

If you care to deal on CL for the longhaul, you'll get a feel for these gomers. If they spend 3 emails wasting your time and only ask for "pics" then they really aren't hot for your goods. If they send a phone number, name and "please reply", then you can bet they're at least lusting a little. Occasionally I give in and send pics but only if I'm bored and want to play the game. 99% of the time, I just chuckle when it plays out EXACTLY as I knew it would.
On the other hand, if I'm interested in an item, I give every piece of info but my visa no. and commit to getting to their local pronto. I've won stuff 1800 miles away because I was honest, committed, and I stayed in contact with the seller. Pissed quite a few folks off that came a little late, offered no guarantees and just underestimated their compitition.

Ditto on this. Do enough online sales, and these low IQ buyers start standing out immediately. You start to recognize who is whom.. I refer to those guys as "fishers" because they are just fishing aimlessly with no real intent to purchase. I typically answer them, but know that it won't go anywhere. They are harmless though.

Aside from the constant radar for scammers ("cash on hand", will only pay by money order, or asks disjointed questions), I've had moderate success as both a buyer and seller. Most of the time, it still works out to weird encounters for the final exchange, though.

I've scored some pretty good deals on CL. Gotta move fast and get straight to the point. If the seller is serious and needs the cashola, your in the drivers seat. Sell a little and done ok, but I only play by certain rules.

I've both bought and sold lots on CL. Cars,MC and parts.
Granted, there are alot of flakes on CL.
You get what you put into it.
If you use lots of good pics and very specific descriptions with instructions.
I always ask for an email with a phone number or I wont reply.
Just that little bit weeds out the morons that can't read.
Also relisting weekly helps move the parts. Most peple dont look past the first page.

I posted my chevelle when we were looking for a 55-7 chevy truck. Ad says trade only. Chevelle is running driving 454 fourspeed, 12 bolt, buckets console etc etc. No paint im looking for a driving truck prefer big block four speed but would consider a automatic. I get a call at 2am asking for a price and more pics. Get offers of 87, 94 trucks, mavericks, two trifive trucks long beds and desert fresh (im talking just dragged in full of cactus and packrats). Ended up pulling the ad, decided to jist keep the chevelle. Jim

I`ve listed my truck for trade only and even put, not for sale trade only do not ask how much because its trade only and guess what? I get calls, how much do you want? I told one guy it`s not for sale trade only. He said thats stupid, why did you put a ad up then? I told the guy, at least I know how to read and I hung up on him.

LOL, funny stories but it seems most bad experiences are for selling or trading a vehicle. I have had better luck selling and buying on CL (no vehicles) in the past year than doing the same on ebay (also no vehicles) in ten years -it's an exageration but you get the idea. Whether buying or selling, for security purpose, you have to be REALLY careful on CL though. My last purchase (two weeks ago) were two 235/60/14 tires (a steal, good tires for 30) from a, getting ready to retire, gentleman and he did not take precautions with me. Good thing i had good intentions, he even le me check out his 65 Elky he had in the garage but if i were him i wold have had someone at home (it was only him) monitoring the transaction.

Yeah, precautions aplenty  before someone comes to my house I get their full name and start a google search, looking for anything bad associated with them. I will run their phone number and such.... most people are willing to give up this information without knowing it, just a piece at a time and you can get a good amount from them.
If I have a small item I will meet them at a business parking lot, I even sold a Big Block in a parking lot because I didn't get a good vibe from the buyer after talking to him. always have a friend who is CCW packing along for the transaction too

anyone that backs out on a deal is not worth your time or $$$.

the best part is not only is he not going to sell them to you, he's probably not going to sell them at all.
Not only will he probably not sell them, the salvage yard right next door gave me a better price for both engines, one running / drop in ready, and the door glass (I did tell them the story so maybe that helped )
My biggest thing was this, when I have a deal, I honor it, even if I find out that I can get better money before the deal is completed..... I gave my word...... and the fact that they never called me, never would have called me, even when they said they would call me, so I had to go there to find out they backed out of the deal and then scramble to find another pair of engines.

While I agree and follow your advice for the most part, I never devulge my number on individual ads, it weeds out the couch jockies that have nothing better to do. I also run a continuous ad with a ton of parts on there which I update quite often and I get a lot of interest from casual contact. I think most chevelle nuts in my area keep my number handy and check to see what's new from month to month.

The problem only happens when you deal with people.

I use CL, etc and just don't reply to the picture collectors, etc. I too don't want anyone coming to the property. I did sell a car to a fellow who came over but , after all, he did fly in from a few states away :)
