I hung some aftermarket fenders about 2 years ago. I didn't topcoat the black coating they came in, and now the tops of the fenders have developed surface rust, probably because I park the car outside my apartment and don't cover it when it rains. I'm looking to prime/seal my fenders, not finish paint them. I've never done paint before though, and I have a ton of questions that I am hoping you guys can help me out with.
- Am a wasting my time; should I just skip the spraying and brush my fenders, assuming that I'll just be sanding them at a later time to paint them again anyway?
- My bolts are rusting; How can I protect them? Just slap some RE on them after it's all back together?
>> Your bolts, you're going to have to remove them and paint them. A spray bomb would be sufficient here.
- If I spray Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, can I paint over it in the future? Does anyone have experience on how RE holds up on exterior parts?
>> I have a few places that have had RE on them, and outdoors for 2 years... holding up well so far.
- Should I sand the entire fender to metal, or just the visibly rusty areas? ie, is there rust lurking?
>> Sand all the black coating off your fenders first, IE down to bare metal.
>> Clean the bare metal fenders with some wax & grease remover, tack off the fenders, mix up your epoxy primer, put in a spray gun, and shoot away.
-- What equipment do I need in order to spray?(I have basically no painting tools) Here's a rundown of what I know so far, and please give me any suggestions you might have:
- Compressor (110volts)
-- Craftsman 17gal 1.1hp?
-- What qualities are important for a compressor?
>> CFM at a given pressure, per spray gun specs
- Spray Gun
-- Good brands(DeVilbliss?)? Terrible Brands?(husky?)
>> DeVillbiss Finishline 2, it works great for blowing on epoxy primer. Make sure it has a 1.7 mil tip at least for spraying the epoxy.
- Primer (porous?)
>> Epoxy primer and hardener, generally a 2:1 mix ratio
>> Get yourself some GOOD epoxy primer...it doubles as a seal because it's non-porous as compared to regulary urethane primer.
- Paint
>> See primer tip above!
- What accessories will I need?
>> Respirator! http://www.1969supersport.com/respirators.html
>> 6" DA (dual action) sander and some 80 grit PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhexive) pads
>> Tape and paper to mask off windows etc.
>> Pressure regulator and water separater for inline with the compressed air.
>> Laquer thinner for cleaning the gun out when finished
>> Wax & Grease Remover
>> Tack Clothes
I am going to keep this top post updated with the suggestions that I get so that it will be a solid reference for those who are starting out with body work like I am.
