Alright guys here it is...

Tonight im at a stop light, and the car just stalls when i stop, and wouldnt get started. so me and my friends have to get out and push it across the intersection, then in the parking lot we went into ,it wouldnt start. It just turned over like it was flooded, then when id get it going it wouldnt hold on idle, so when i finally got it to go i was going good for a little while, then it starts to bog down when i was going like 30, and making a bad putting sound. so i pull into a lot and it totally stalls and stops on me, so i had to fight with it to get it goign again and when i was going it sounded like a stick went like through the transmission and i saw a puff of smoke behind me (a stick didnt go through, thats just what id compare the noise to).

last week i put a new edelbrock 600cfm carb on it, and also a new alternator and a manual choke. Could somthing with the new parts be the problem.

thanks alott

Check to make sure your new manual choke did not fall out of adjustment and or check choke adjustment.Make sure it is staying open all the way when engine is at operating temp...Report back with findings and surely someone will help you along.

ill check that, i hope thats the problem. iv never had this happen before i installed the choke 2 days ago, it happend yesterday but after a few tries i got the car running, and that was at a cold engine start up.

sounds like a little pice of junk got caught in the needle and seat of the carb, it's flooding over. old racer trick if you want to try it: pinch off the rubber fuel line with vise-grips, start the engine any way you can, run it at a very fast idle. it'll clean out after a minute, then when it uses up all the fuel in the bowls it will cough and sputter, bog down. as soon as this happens release the vise-grips. The floats will be laying on the bottom of the fuel bowl, needles wide open. the rush of incoming fuel will often wash the microscopic piece of stuff thru, and you're OK. Of course, all kinds of disclaimers and safety warnings about fire hazards apply here. usually works.

I had a similar problem (no puff of smoke though) where the car kept dying. I thought my carb was clogged, but it turned out my distributor cap (the part that rotates to contact the plug-wire connections) was loose from the gear. This basically added severe randomness to my timing, making me have to floor the gas for the engine to run at all. A new distributor (and plugs, as they were fouled) solved the problem. This is easy to check by popping off the distributor cap and trying to turn it by hand. (it shouldn't turn)

I had that same problem a couple months ago it was my distributor AND carb. Timing got knocked out and the little fuel needles I think had crap in them. Was this a brand new carb? Mayeb the floats arent adjusted properly? If not maybe a good ol' vaccum leak

Yeah carb is a brand new edelbrock 600 cfm. So i dont think the needles would be all gunked up. The thing is, this mornign i started it up and it ran fine and i drove it to school. I forgot to mention that yesterday morning i had to put regular grade gas in the car, i usually use ultimate. The idle was kind of bad and the exaust smelled bad because of this i think. Iv been getting black around the exaust tips also. Is this from the bad gas? How would i know if it was a vacuum leak? it seems that the rubber plug in the front of the carb has a couple cracks in it, could this be the cause of it? thanks alott

Did you figure out your problem yet?

When I first read your post, it sounded like you were just out of gas, maybe a clogged fuel filter. If you're getting gas to the carb, you could be flooding. Can you see any gas coming out the top of the carb pump?

I had a problem with flooding with a "new" Edelbrock. I assumed it was 'tuned' and I could just use it right out of the box - seems the floats weren't adjusted right. I adjusted based on the measurements in the drawing in the manual and it was still bad. Turns out the right distances for the float are in the text in the manual, but are wrong on the diagram.

Havent figured out what it was, the cars been running fine since it happend. I set the idle a little higher and filled it up with 94 octane gas and ran some gumout through it.

I had the same problem earlier this year, car was running out of fuel let it sit for awhile it would start back up and run fine, turned out to be the fuel sock in the tank closing up on me while driving.

Sounds to me like your getting gas with water in it somewhere just my 02 :(
