Ok, so I'm stuck rebuilding the engine in my truck, and I'm starting to lose it while figuring out bearing oil clearances...

I used standard size replacement bearings, which when checked gave me .0010 oil clearance, the high end of the clearance range (.0010-.0025).

Two of the bearings are spot on at .0010, the back two are just higher than that. Starting with them at .0010, then any wear will begin to take it out of acceptable range, right?

Now, if I swap up to +.026mm oversized, which is .00102in, that should theoretically move the oil clearance up tighter to around .00202, and more in the middle of the range, correct? No "hidden" factors that would make it something else?

Just need a check on my math, looking at all these thousandths for so long now, I'm going cross-eyed... :clonk:

Thanks!

(This is what I get for buying a Ford truck...$1K+ rebuild only six months in on the 4.2 v6 ...damn you, torque to yield bolts!!!)

Hmm...after looking at it again, that would make sense, seeing as its a stock diameter crank with std. bearings...

D'oh!

Guess I'll stick with what I've got and put the $60 for different bearings towards the new rod bolts I've still gotta get...

Thanks again.

So what happened to the 4.2?

We put 148k miles on a little brother 3.8, with two blown head gasket escapades. Other than that it was a neat little engine. Still going 3 years after I sold it. However, even though I bleed Ford Blue, I would have suggested that you pass by that particular six banger.

Can relate to the torque to yield bolt pain in the wallet. I believe they make regular type bolts as replacements.

x2 on .001 being ok, or on the tight end of the range. Should work if that is in fact the value you have confirmed.

So what happened to the 4.2?
A mere six months into owning my "new" '98 F150, an intake gasket leak caused a rod to snap, sending shrapnel through the side of the oil pan. Its a common problem with the 4.2, I'm just a tick north of a grand so far on the rebuild...but little crap like discovering all the one use bolts keeps creeping up. I'm definitely NOT a fan of modern engines after this.:noway::noway:

And trying to figure out which are the "good" replacement gaskets that are supposed to fix said leak, so my freshly built motor doesn't grenade a second time has been fun.

Considering the time, money, and aggrivation I'm debating keeping the truck once I'm done, given the potential for disaster with NO advance warning other than constantly checking the coolant level...
