Which is the best? Lets address these main topics.

POWER
Makes the most N/A
Makes the most with a power adder

MPG
Which one can make the power and save some green at the pump

COST
Which one will give you the power and not break the bank
Which is the best deal at these hp ranges. 300-500, 500-700, 700-900, and 1000+hp
Feel free to change these guidlines if they are not satisfactory. Let the discussion begin!!!:hurray:

BBC FTW!

LSX= no torque and stroker motors are big $$. Forced induction they are great.

:noway:

Summit has the GM LSX 454 making 620hp at 6200 and 590lb ft at 4500...I wouldn't call that no torque... but I'll agree they are more expensive...

Far as MPG, I enjoy geting 27-30mpg out of my Z06, which makes me reconcider at times why I have a 7mpg BBC...but I love my BBC :D

Considering the advanced for its time design of the bbc and how little r&d has gone into its development as compared to the sbc over the past 6 decades the bbc clearly holds its own against the much higher tech computer assisted technology. Displacement rules.

you should ask curly,

he has what I believe is an ls now, he had an sbc, and his new motor is faster than most similarly specd(read factory parts) bbcs out there.

The addition of a six speed is not going to 3X his gas mileage
aerodynamics play a big roll, but still with all being equal except engine size, I still see the newer style of engine would see 2x the mpg.

For practical automotive purposes one might argue that the bbc has effectively been made obsolete by a combination of high-po sbcs and diesels.

Stock bottom end LS I've heard is good to near 1000HP ???

LS motor is the way of the future but $ for $ I like the old SBC or BBC once you factor in the swap over components :yes:
And the fear the exhaust rumble puts in the driver in the other lane....Priceless

small block size BIG block power LS7 design features:

* 427 cid/7.0 L bore 4.125 in/104.8mm and stroke 4.00 in/101.6mm
* The LS7 used titanium intake and hollow-stem sodium filled exhaust valves to keep them cooler and reduce the chance of pre-detonation due to a hot valve.
* Forged steel crankshaft and main bearing caps.
* Forged titanium connecting rods
* Dry sump oil system.

and thats before putting any of MANY different power adders on one !!

anybody ever hear the saying walk softly an carry a BIG STICK ;)

My son's 4650 lb. TBSS (395 h.p.- 364) run better times then my 3620 lb. (375-396) did with stock displacement. I'm pretty impressed with the LS cars. My son tells me his TBSS feels like a BBC. Lots of stock and lightly modified Mustangs and Camaros would agree.

For lower power levels the LS/LQ engines are king for cheap. For 1000whp+ bbc is cheaper and probably more reliable given the same cost. Ive got a turbo bbc and turbo LQ and the bbc makes alot more power alot easier. The LQ could do it but it would cost alot more.

LS the most efficient and the best hp per cube but expensive. BBC the best for torque. Modular is worthless with out a blower and then a well build ls motor will still outrun a blown mod motor with no helper, been there and done that many times with my brothers 2000 ss camaro car. Infact, recently he outran a 496 with a large solid roller, afr heads and a dominator with his little 370 inch hydraulic cam ls motor. It was heads up and a dead even race until high gear, ls won by 2 cars. My brothers ls motor runs real hard for what it is and that 496 was not what I think it should have been, but still intresting comparison of old school vs new school.
I still prefer my BBC N/A or on the juice.

Here is my opinnion...

POWER
Makes the most N/A- BB hands down no contest
Makes the most with a power adder- All react very well to this so its hard to say...

MPG
Which one can make the power and save some green at the pump- LS for sure

COST
Which one will give you the power and not break the bank- Depends on the power level...
-400 SB
400-600 LS
600-900 BB
1000+ this would be which reacts best to a power adder. I think the BB would come out on top. What many people over look is the drivability of a BB at these levels in comparison to any other engine. Remember this topic is based on a street driven car running on pump gas.

Oh wait I forgot to include the modular engine.... Thats because its hindered by its lack of CI so without a power adder it cant even begin to compete in this field. Ford thinks they have done something making 400hp with a 302 and 4 cams. Did no one tell them about the chevy 302 from back in the day? It only had 1 cam...:yes:

I love my TBSS, but it is not even close in comparison to a BBC!!! Its not even in the same ball park as a BBC. My TBSS is pretty modified, and it doesnt come out of the hole anywhere near like a BBC does. On the top end the TBSS will blow away a BBC, but its playing catch up coming out of the hole. Not even a comparison in my opinion, and I also own both, neither of which are stock.
