After a 3 year hiatus from racing due to a cross-country move, and making several changes to the car including paint, I was finally able to get it out this weekend. I didn't know what to expect, everything in the front and rear suspension has been changed, as well as the brake system. Some of you know what was changed, but I'll break it down. In the front, I took out the wiped Moroso coils and tried some 225 Santhuffs, but they were too high. I swapped with Offroadr for some 200's, and now it is REALLY low, but lifts nice and easy. Poly bushings top and bottom, double nuts on the lowers, "floating" uppers. I added Proforged tall upper ball joints while I was in there, and now have something like 7" of travel. Still using 90/10 Lakewoods. In the rear, the stock Moog coils and Eddy No-Hops were removed, and Sinister's old BMR 2" drop springs were put in along with poly bushings in the housing. The airbag was taken out and a BMR ARB was installed and setup at neutral with me in the seat. I really hoped to have the scratch to put some good DA shocks on this year, but it just wasn't in the cards, so the old "White Monroes" were swapped for CE 3-ways. The pinion working angle was set(engine/trans -3, pinion 0). The 30x13.5 E.T. Streets were toast, so with the lower ride height, 29x10 Hoosiers were all that would fit and new ones were purchased. As for the engine, it received a new set of valve springs, and the carb was freshened up.
The first opportunity I had to take it out was Saturday. The track was having a big car show with test and tune from 10-1. I knew the prep would not be there and it would be mostly street tire cars, but I just needed to make sure it went straight and the brakes worked. The car isn't registered, so I hadn't driven it at all. I took it up and down the return road a couple times to feel it out, and it was all good so to the lanes I went. During the burnout, there was quite a bit of vibration, more than usual? I was a little concerned, but staged it up anyways. I left at 5000 on the brake and cut a .010. Guess I still remember how to do it.
. The front lifted really nice, but I could tell it was spinning. No vibration down track, so I ran it out the back door. 1.48-6.76-101. All N/A bests. After re-checking lash, timing, ect, I went back up. This time it spun really bad and I had to steer it pretty good. 1.52-6.85-102. They announced that the lanes would be shutting down soon. I wanted to make a nitrous pass, but was a little worried about traction. Turned the bottle on, and just from the suns rays it was at 1000psi. Threw some fresh NGK's in, put a conservative tune-up in it(93N-82F 6psi -9 degrees), set the 2-step to 4000, and the window switch to 4200. It came out of the hole hard, then spun, I pedaled it once, and ran it out. 1.47-6.25-113. Looks promising, but the rear suspension still isn't right. I have the last two runs on video, but my desktop at home crashed so I haven't been able to upload them. Trying with my work computer now, I'll post them up if it works. Just looking at the small screen of the camera, it appears to be "squating" hard. Before with the No-Hops, it would seperate a lot, but twisted without the ARB. Now the front lifts better, but it appears to me that the IC is not where it needs to be. Actually got some scuffing on the right slick. I plotted it a while back, don't have the numbers handy, but it seemed to be in the ballpark. The lowers are nearly level, maybe 3/4" higher in front. The uppers point slightly down to the front about 1/2" higher in the rear(stock 12 bolt housing). I'm sure the junk shocks aren't helping, had them in the 50/50 position, would be nice to have the DA's and set them at full stiff. I meant to get it on the track scale, but forgot. Thoughts? Comments?
Finally, I apologize for the lengthy post, but I feel the need to thank several members that have helped me out in one way or another in the past year or two. Wether it was advice, direction, or parts, it was greatly appreciated. In no particular order, and I'm sure I will leave somebody out, but here goes:
Crazy Davey, Dtrubey, Bdr66, Sinister, BillyGman, Strokd66, Offroadr, Bob West, Fatrat70, Wolfplace, Bracketchev1221.
Thanks fellas!:beers: Looking to whittle away at it and maybe get that 5 second pass this year. Davey beat me to to the punch, but I'm still going for it!
