i.e. :I've a) heard 307 v8 with super turbos(not hemis) barely audible (no headers),
b) 427 sounded like a mild small block,
c) wild 350 with heads, headers, rpm cam,2 chamber flowmasters this thing sounds like it's breaking something ,but it cool and mellow inside the cab
d) Now mine mild 350 with super hemis dynoma x,headers, and x pipe and the damn thing won't shut up it just rumbles and rumbles .

e) oh yeah what about new corvettes I can't believe that all it takes is a pair of mufflers to silence this thing

any ideas ?

Different compression ratios, heads, and who knows what all make for different sounding engines. I was at the drags one night last summer, and standing next to the water box. All the rails came through, and several were quite loud. All had B/B engines. Then this one rail comes up , and I mean, it hurt, not just your ears, this thing hurt your insides, down in your gut. It sounded completely different, and it ran completely different also. When we left, he was in the finals, and running about 3/10th faster through the 1/8th than all the others. I don't know what was different, but it was that noticable!

Doug makes a good point.Keeping that in mind,a few old timers told me that motors do have "personalities".You could probably build duplicate motors with same parts and specs, and 1 of the 2 will be stronger and more lively to drive.Just kinda how machinery is...and you could probably have a dog in the mix too...Interesting question...Shawn

Do you have the part numbers for your Dynomax Exhaust System (everything, including the "X" Member)? We have the Ceramic Coated Dynomax Headers on our '69 Elke Frame Off Resto, and want the rest of the Dynomax System. Yours "SOUNDS" like what we want. Our motor is the 330HP/350 GM Vortec Crate Motor.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

One big factor in exh sound is camshaft profiles, more lift, duration, lobe seperation and overlap, The more air you push through an eng. the louder the exh.(usually). If you take an eng. and only swap out the cam the exh. tone will change.

1 to 70 ss 454 : is that 462 ci. ? and you have almost the same setup as i do,except for the smaller (louder mufflers) an no xpipe.
2 What would be a quieter cam profile ?
I have a 278 crane with 222@ and .467 lift right now.

From my experience, I think Bret has it. Camshaft is the biggest factor after exhaust (mufflers/ pipe size/ exit point.)
Seems some wild dragsters open the exhaust with very high pressures still in cylinders - POW - POW - POW MMMMMMMMM love it.

Ive got my big block blowing through 2 1/2 inch pipes that run into a pair of Maremont Cherry Bombs. From there it flows through the stock tailpipes with resonators. Around town you can sneak by the boys in blue all day long, but when you open it up...., well lets just say ive been known to set off car alarms.
