Anybody use RESONATORS on there 66SS like they originally came with.????

Anybody use RESONATORS on there 66SS like they originally came with.????

Hi: 1966SS 396 Chevelles originally came with resonators tucked in behind the rear wheel well's to stop tailpipe drone and resonance-especially inside the convertibles like mine. Has anybody ever installed a set..?? If so-Where did you find them and how did they ever fit up there since my stock tailpipe's go over the rear axle and dump behind the rear wheels. It's a series of bends and mabey a straight length of only 7". Anybody use resonators...???

I had a set on a 66 396 el camino. More room behind the rear wheels though, both length and height. Got `em from muffler shop. 3" round short mufflers, maybe 10" in length.

Gardner is the premier resto exhaust Co...their website shows a 66 SS with no resonators??..if it came from the factory..Gardner will have it.

Plenty of '65s had resonators (US or otherwise).

In 69 they were only on the Chambered exhaust

Again... I've never seen or read of such a thing for 66's and have been around them for some time.. that's not to say it may not have happened.. but would have been an exception in my opinion.. 65's yes.. I know that to be true. I am sure Dale is feverishly looking through archives at this moment.. nice to be retired :D

Yes I would agree with that .........66 327's here had resonators on tailpipes including the 327 wagons .....I think even if it was single exhaust but not sure of that

For one, all L79 cars in '65 had resonators. I'm not sure about the 300hp 327 cars, some evidence points to resonators being included with that dual exhaust set up, other evidence points to them simply being an option in addition to the dual exhaust on non-L79 cars.

I'm not sure how a wagon would use resonators on a dual exhaust system. The spare tire well on the passenger side would be in the way of mounting the resonator. All wagons and El Caminos had tail pipes that dumped to the side behind the rear wheels, never going back to the bumper with dual exhaust.

A further look into my '65 assembly manual seems to indicate that all non-wagon/EC V8 dual exhaust systems were to have resonators. Of course that doesn't answer the question for '66..... BUT, I'll bet if someone were to consult their '66 assembly manual some useful information may be found there.

A 1966 AIM shows RPO N10 dual exhaust resonator & pipe are shown for RPO L30 327 engine (exc. sta wagon & El Camino); 3878305 L.H., 3878306 R.H. and for RPO L35 3878303 L.H. and 3888728 R.H. (hold that thought) - but says the information is transferred from N10/A3 to section 8 of the AIM early in September of 65 and there is no mention of them in section 8 and neither the drawings nor parts listing show resonators.

My Chevrolet parts book does show the same 3878305 L.H., 3878306 R.H. resonator & pipes for 66 and 67 283/327 engines (exc. sta wagon & El Camino) although I don't think it really apply to the 67 283 since dual exhaust was only an option on the 327/275 in 67 and 66 AIM calls out RPO L30.

However the parts book makes no mention of resonators on the SS cars. The 3878303 L.H. mentioned in the 66 AIM for L35 resonator shows up in the parts book as a resonator for 65/66 327 (not 396) and 3888728 R.H. doesn't show up anywhere and it's odd the R.H. number would be so different from the L.H. number.

My 67 AIM has no section at all for RPO N10 (probably since it was transferred in 1966) and has no mention at all of resonators in section 8.

Maybe it's terminology from a source that's confusing. My parts book has listed under the heading;
3.705 PIPE-EXTENSION-RESONATOR ASSY., Muffler Tail (exhaust pipe in group 3.609)
(then under CHEVELLE)
66-67 (S.S.) (396),
67 w/Sp. H/Per (327) ...... 3901731 L.H.
66-67 (S.S.) (396),
67 w/Sp. H/Per (327) ...... 3901732 R.H.

These are the same over-the-axle tail pipes shown in both 66 and 67 AIMS for SS cars. Maybe the inclusion of 'RESONATOR ASSY.' in the group heading is misleading in this case (?)
