Hi all!! my name is Chris and new to the blog.

Just bought a 70 Chevelle SS from a classic car dealer that stated that it was numbers matching with build sheet. The 6 ending numbers on the VIN is 202040 which is on the build sheet in box # 8, however box 24 is 384683. i think i got duped OR has anyone out there ever seen anything like this? Is this an altered build sheet? Note the type of lettering on the number 202040 and box # 148481. Thanks for any assistance, Chris

I'll let you answer your own question. Take a look at these 1970 Baltimore SS396 Build Sheets.

Your sequence number should match the number on your cowl tag.

The Vin number matches the Vin on the dash.

Do you have the original build sheet or just a copy?
I have the original build sheet, but I copied it, so what you see is a copy of the original. So 384683 is the VIN in Box 24 but the dash and the engine stamp is 202040. I don't have the car at my location at this time, I will check it when I get there. your thoughts? thanks

Your VIN number is 136370B202040. It's a combination of the top of box 24 and the stamped number at the top of box 8. It will be the number stamped into the VIN plate on the left front dash pad seen through the front window. The engine pad should be stamped with the condensed VIN (CONVIN) 10B20204. 1= Chevrolet motors division. 0- 1970. B Baltimore. 202040= sequence number

Your trim tag should read 70 13637 B384683 which is the number at the bottom of box 24. It's the Fisher body sequence number and usually does not match the VIN number.

There's more info here...might explain better than I did. Go down to the Baltimore section...1970 Chevelle Trim Tags

If you can supply a picture of your VIN on the dash and a picture of the trim tag we'll see if it matches up and appears correct. A picture of the engine pad stamp behind the alternator will reveal if the engine is numbers matching. Use non destructive means to clean the pad if necessary. You don't want to scratch or scrape the pad.

If you have a link for the car at the dealer, we can check it out for you. I actually found the car, I'll check it out. You can post the link to share with others if you like.

Hey Al, I was able to get the the vehicle yesterday, and yes the tag in the car, near the windshield definitely matches up with the numbers on the build sheet. The correct VIN shows up on the dash pad and the correct VIN #'s are on the pad on the motor. So I think at this point, I am satisfied that we have a match, except for the paint. It shows paint code 48, which is green and now the car is probably paint code 75. I want to thank you very much for your help and quick responses. have a great summer!!

Hi Al, hope all is well. I am hoping that you would be able to help me with a question. Do you know what the correct ignition timing is on this particular L34 engine with standard transmission and at what correct RPM to correspond with the timing mark. I want to do a complete tune-up on the car since it was sitting for so long. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you and have a great and safe Memorial Day weekend. Total rain here on the East Coast, 🙁
