I have a Sony TVR520 digital video recorder, does anyone know a good software package that will allow me to create MPEG's from recorded videos? Can I download directly from the camcoder to create them? I can do digital still shots (memory stick), but the software that came from Sony (Picture gear Lite) doesn't create MPEG's.

Well Tom, I don't know if this will help you or not. I am also looking at the same situation, primarily to put video on a CD.

I have a Sony Mavica digital camera which will take a short video (15 seconds) which I have logged onto a website and can be viewed with certain types of media players (primarily RealPlayer). For this digital video no other software was needed.

I would like to be able to do this with my son's Canon Camcorder as well. From what I understand you require a specific connection and software for the computer. The one I am considering right now is "Dazzle - Digital Video Creator 80" which should do the job and it is priced very reasonable. There are lots of them out there ranging in price.

Apparently, once you load the video on your computer, you are able to edit it to where you want it to be. If you do a search through your web browser under "Video MPG" you should get lots of options.

Hope this helps a bit, good luck.

Tom -
You might try reposting your question in "Bug Hunt". There are a couple of guys there that are pretty good at this kind of stuff. Unfortunately, I am not.

Thanks for the responses Guys.

Don, I think I can do the same short "moving stills" with my Sony, but I don't think it would even make it 15 seconds. I am hoping to get some software that will let me create longer MPEG's. I'll look into the "Dazzle" software.

Bob, thanks for the site suggestion. I'll check them out.

Tom,

Dazzle is just a piece of hardware to get the video from your camcorder into the PC for analog camcorders (actually, I think they have a digital version as well). The best way to get video from a DV camcorder is through the firewire port (you have to have a firewire port in your PC to connect them). Pinnacle makes some decent software packages that include a firewire card for around $100. The software that comes with their cards (I'm thinking of StudioDV in particular) will allow you to save the video as AVI, MPEG, and Real Media. That's all predicated on your camcorder being DV and having firewire (I don't know off the top of my head if the TRV520 is DV or Digital 8).

Its a great package I bought it at Best Buy (looking at the recipt) 4134984 is the number that best buy has the product listed as, total cost out the door $107.99.. Its a great program and the card works great as well. hope this helps
