So just had motor put in my 70 chevell early this summer, nice healthy ran great 540 horse 540 tq. Fully hyraulic roller, roller rockers, roller lifters, holley 750 double pumper, merlin 330cfm rectangular port heads, mechanical fuel pump, pump gas, etc.

Ran great, pulled hard past 3 grand all the way to redline, sounded smooth, left it sit in garage for 4 weeks while out of state, turned key without pumping pedal and fired right over and ran smooth.

Then one day took out do drive and noticed major power difference. Lost a lot of power. Did not sound the same running either. Would loose major power over 3 grand and would pop/backfire. Would diesel when you shut the car off, continue running or trying to. Noticed small rubber fuel hose (only rubber left) looked collapsed. adjusted valves, started and ran horrible, 180 compression on all cylinders except the one with 0 and no vaccum do to collapsed lifters. after fact dropped plunger on two roller lifters (bullet brand) replaced them with comp racing roller lifters. Drilled needles out in carb. Ran great for about an hour, then returned to as before.

Now the thing will barely start after sitting overnight, not even stay running while pedal is down until warm, run uneven, reeks of rich/fuel even though I was told by a speed shop the carb was "way leaned out", feels weaker, looses major power above 3 grand and pops/backfires when taken that high, and diesels when shut off. What the hell is wrong with this POS, i keep thinking it's a fuel issue, or, timing? What could it be?

I'm going to ditch the mechanical fuel pump, put a holley blue pump on with holley regulator, and if that fails I give up. I have a cummins diesel laying in my garage that I will, mark my words, put in the car to spite everyone.

Well if the carb was running rich due to crud in it that likely fuel/carbon fouled the plugs so he really does need to check the plugs out & replace them if they are found to be black/fouled at the same time he cleans the carb & installs an inline fuel filter.

If he doesnt chk plugs and they are fouled from running too rich it will still run like crap post carb cleaning & installing fuel filter sending him chasing his tail eslewhere when it simply needs a fresh set of plugs at that point.

Just my $.02.

Wow. Its a shame when a guy with my skill and experience is looking toward your builder with a "WTF" look on my face.....thats a hell of a thing right there.

"No, son....filters are just restrictions and we dont use them in order to max performance. No worries, we use ZMAX!"

Good luck man.

Scott,

I cant answer that question for you, I have never heard of air getting into steel fuel line. Possible a very poorly mis conception of vapor lock but that would be a stretch of the imagination.
It shouldnt be time to sell and get out yet. We have all had those wonderful times of frustration and the occasional Duh??? happen to us as well. The car is sitting in storage, so enjoy Christmas and again, I would be happy to give you a hand. You have access to a huge knowledge base of dedicated gear heads here, so take advantage of it. Come spring when you are ready to pull it out, or sooner if the temps come back up lets see if you cant make that thing fun to run around in.
