It seems to me that I have heard some criticism of the 4L60E transmisions for being not very durable, but I have not heard the same kind of criticism of the 700R4. Since these seem to have a common ancestor , I would expect them to be similar in mechanical strength. Is the 4L60E really any different?

Lots of articles, threads and posts exist on the 700-R4's frailties, weird gearset, fitment and various other shortcomings.

Which explains in large part the substantial preference and desirability of the 200-4R as the #1 OD trans choice for most.

do a 4l80e with a valve body from jakesperformance.com, i did my whole conversion for a great price, that was me buying the atsg service manual, rebuild kit, valve body, and 3200 stall from revmax, craigslist core, and trading my th350 and b&m stall for new custom driveline..the cost to build a 2004r to last as long as the 4l80e will not justify what you get from the 4l80e in terms of manners brute strength and reliability, and later on you can get the controller if you so desire... jmho

The 700R4 and 4L60E transmissions are pretty much identical. 4L60E 's will have high energy 3-4 clutches and a H/E 2-4 band. The 700R4 may have these as well if it has been rebuilt other than this the gear train and shaft sizes are the same in both.
An other option is to find a 4L65E... These are the same as a 700R4 and 4L60E but a couple of things that make them stronger are a torrington bearing which replaces a thrust washer on the front ring gear, a 5 pinion front planetary and a 5 pinion rear planetary.

There are upgrades you can do to all three to make the stronger if you are to rebuild them. Keep in mind the 4L60E and 4L65E are electronic transmissions and require electronic inputs and outputs ans well as a on board computer. The 700R4 is strictly highdraulic other than the lock up wiring for the tourqe converter clutch.

4L80E's are very strong and would hold up behind what ever you attach it to but they do rob horse power because of the sheer mass of the torque converter and the transmission.

Hope this answers your question.

In the fwiw column I have had a recent chat with the "REAL" Art Carr of Huntington Beach and he mentioned that 2004r cases are getting a bit rare. They haven't produced them for years. Just sayin....

ya want one ya better step up to the plate some time in the near future. I got mine and I love it.

Tell him I have brand new cases, how many does he want?
