The assmbly manual has the front fender top molding part number as 3972397-8 and I have found some for sale that list the part number as 3977512 and 3977511 would the later be a updated number and where would I be able to find that out. Thanks for any help with this.

Are you sure it's a chevelle molding you found for sale? the 69 Cutlass used a molding very similar to the 70 Malibu in the same area.

The 511 and 512 moldings are the correct ones for the top edge of the fenders on your 70 Chevelle.
