We have not discussed any 69's in some time, and since many of us will be working on projects over the winter, I thought this slick example might be a good test case for what is right and what is not...as always, done for the purpose of knowedge base and that this is the forum for originality...this is without a doubt a very sharp car...what say you 69 folks...is it correctly restored?

Ouch, that’s my 69 you guys are bludgeoning to death. That’s ok I know it’s all in good fun and for the purpose of learning. I’ve done the same before. I have a near concourse correct 70 SS 396 un-restored numbers Chevelle so I am somewhat aware of this cars shortcomings. I purchased this car as a non-numbers matching car from a 17 year old who, I’m proud to say would not drive it in the rain. That made it kind of tough getting to school. When I told his dad that it was in fact a numbers matching car he jacked the price up 6K. The next day he called me back and told me that was not the right thing to do and sold it to me for the original asking price…good man. I struggled with whether to take to back to 100% original but decided that all the work and non-original items on the car had been done so well I would leave it as is and just replace a few of the most obvious incorrect items (chrome alt, chrome radiator support, chrome, chrome, chrome, red plug wires ect, ect) and do a world class rotisserie detail job on it. I don’t claim in the auction that it’s 1000 point car but do state that all the work was correctly done. Meaning done to the highest standards not necessarily to concourse standards. Non the less I love this car and wish I could keep it. However, 4 Chevelles is my limit. The fact is this is the most stunning Chevelle I have ever owned and it does run, drive and look like a new car. Someone is going to end up with one of the nicest Chevelles around.

You sure that wire tie on the fuel line is not factory correct? ;)

It’s been so long since my last posting I forgot my password...Formerly TXSS

This is the funniest thread to date........You guys are great and glad to see the owner is taking it for what it is.....a learning at least for me.
The only thing that caught my eye (besides the beauty of a chevelle) was the lack of black below the trunk, the chrome trim gas peddle and didn't the SS have the radio antena on the rear quater panel? I don't know.

Tom I'm with you, I don't wanow them mine either, Although I would if I could just figure out how to post a damn picture under my name

OK, OK Back panel is now painted correctly. I agree I should have never put the car out there with out having the back panel correctly painted. Looks much better now. With all of its non-correctness I still love this car and I’m going to be sad when it’s gone.

So, with great reluctance I’ve decided to turn you animals lose on my pride and joy. My un-restored numbers matching 1970 Chevelle SS 396 I know the caution sticker is not correct but is there for practical purposes and to keep 7 year old fingers safe. Remember un-restored but not un-detailed. Go ahead and give it your best shot. I’m sure I’m going to learn something I don’t want to know. Pic's aren't great but I think they will get the job done

You have a Very nice car collection, and I really like your 70 Chevelle. It is a nice color combo.I am Partial to red/red..Is it for Sale?

Because you asked, not bashing,& just from what I can see in your pix:
*The Master Cylinder is a replacement, and not the Correct design.
*The Radiator Cap should be a Large ear.
*Alternator pulley should be natural metal color.
*Whats the Bracket on the D/S fender well?
*Battery & Tires aftermarket.(I am sure you already know that)
*Plastic Grills should not be in the Cowl area.
*You mention this is a stripe Delete car,but you can't delete something it never had.Working Cowl Ind. Flapper door hoods recieved stripes automatically,so they would be considered stripe delete.
Your Bulge hood did not recieve stripes automatically,it had to be extra ordered,RPO D88,if the owner wanted them from the Factory.
Now all of these are no big deal, and can easily be fixed.

Is it going on Ebay soon? ;)

Did ANY of the 69 Chevelle's come with the antenna in the windshield?
Because I took a whinshield from I think a cutlass (it's been awhile) and filled in the fender hole. I think it looks sleeker........But then again that's my personal opinion.

Thanks for the comments on my 70 Chevelle. I haven’t heard anything to devastating....yet.

TDW: The Fathom Blue Chevelle was sold to a Chevelle lover in Nashville for 25,500.00. Man did that thing scream with that aluminum head crate motor in it. I traded a guy a 68 Plenum Air Z28 with 9,500 original miles that needed total restoration straight up for the Blue Chevelle. The block had been decked on the Z. Luckily we both felt we got the best end of the deal. However, we all know I got the best end of that deal.

mr70: I booked marked your L78 site a number of years ago and used it as a reference. I would have to say that the L78 is my dream car…harder to find than an LS6 and IMO much more interesting. There seams to be about 20,000 LS6’s on the market...I guess if you put two LS6’s in a garage alone for 9 months you end up with three?

  • After this picture was taken the master cylinder was replaced with the original that came in a box when I purchased the car.</font>
  • Radiator cap should have large ears? Did not know that</font>
  • Alternator pulley is now natural</font>
  • I do not know what the bracket is on D/S fender well. It was there when I purchased the
car. Did any 70 SS Chevelles come from the
factory with plastic fender wells? This car
has plastic wells. I’m considering changing to
metal, as these are not in perfect condition.
I’ve held off as I’ve been told by a previous
owner that they are original and by others
that they are not. Which is correct?</font>
  • No plastic grills in the cowl area? Really.</font>
  • I should have said that this car was special ordered by Herb Lungren Chevrolet Hays, Ks
with out cowl induction or stripes as all the
Chevelles on the lot had cowl and stripes. The
original owner told me that the dealer ordered
two identical cars. One for the lot and one
for him. Man would I like to find its sister.</font>
Thanks for the comments regarding my past rides. However, calling my past rides a collection is somewhat of a stretch. Those are all cars I have owned in the past and loved every one of them. I’m not well healed enough to own that many fine cars at a time. Currently I only have the 69 this thread started with, a 69 numbers Vette that is turning into a money pit and my 70 Chevelle. I’ve had the 70 for almost 10 years and would only sell it to feed my family or to purchase your L78. I’ll trade you straight up and I’ll pay the freight going both ways…what ya say…do we have a deal. ;)
Seriously if you are ever in the market to sell that car I’m your man.

Thanks for all the input
