Hi, perhaps you can help! I drove my 69 Chevelle 396 SS around and when I went to turn the car off after putting it into park... I could not turn the key back to off, nor turn the car off. I ended up pulling the center plug on the distributor cap and disconnected the battery. I've tried spraying some WD-40, held the color out while pushing key in and anything else I can think of. Out of park, back to park, all the way, up. turn the wheel etc. Cannot get the car out of that position.
Note: I was able to start the car back up to pull it in the garage after connecting the battery (so the start engine position and return to the running position worked fine)...
any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Where the steering column runs through the firewall in the engine compartment try pulling up on the linkage that runs down to the transmission it could be slightly out of adjustment or bound up at the steering column where it hooks up, only takes a little movement.

HI, left this project in my garage for a while and just got too it. After pulling the steering and getting the lock out I notice that I still can't take the key out even with the lock in my hand. It's jammed and won't turn. I would guess that means that all I have to do is replace the lock itself and put it back together.
I notice many places online selling lock replacement.
My chevelle is all original and i want to make sure I don't degrade the value. Would I need to replace the door locks as well to match the key or would you try and re-key (if thats possible) so that the key matches the door?
any thoughts?
thanks in advance

If you have a column shift, there is something wrong with either the lock rod to ignition switch (down on the lower column) or the alignment of the ignition switch. It sounds like the ignition switch may be moved away from the lock position and keeping the key from being rotated back fully to the off position. I’d unbolt the ignition switch and see if it will allow the key to work properly.
