Could someone help me identify if this is the correct compressor for a 68, L35 automatic (see photo). The decal shows Model # 6550133 and 3.75 R 12 charge which the assembly manual indicates is correct. Is there a SN stamped into the compressor? What # should be stamped in the Code Number line of the decal?

6550133 is the correct model number, assuming that's the original decal on the compressor. Can you read the code number and let me know what it is? :)

The only complete readable code numbers I've found are 041781, 062781, & 031281. I've seen 09xxx1, 0xxxx4, and some totally obscured numbers from the A/C hose insulation rubbing on them.
I wasn't smart enough to note the build dates on the cars, so I'm not certain if the code numbers are dates (like April, 17, 1968 for the first one) or not.

Bill,

From what I've gathered in previous threads that code is, in fact, a date. The three you have listed would decode as April 17, 1968, 1st shift; June 27 68, 1st shift and March 12, 68, 1st shift.

Lou, what's the build date on your car? If the code on the compressor indicates a date it would be April 5, 68.

My original A6 from my 66 SS has a typical GM casting date pad on the backplate of the compressor. It seems to match my car's general build progression pretty closely. (I believe from memory that it was a June 65 casting month/year on the compressor and a September 65 build on the car itself.)

Sadly, the decal is damaged. It is model 6550133 and 3.75 lb. of R12, but the code number is obliterated.
