'66 Bench Seat Rails & Carpet Padding

Took my bench seat out to remove, clean & paint the seat rails. Discovered that the rear pedestal on both rails has been torch cut, shortened about 3/4" and then welded and riveted back together. As a result, the seat does look just a hair more reclined that what I think standard appearance is. I intend to get the pedestals back to their original height, unless someone tells me this was some sort of ugly factory modification and should be left alone.

Along with that, what is the most common practice for carpet padding over MegaMat/UltraMat foil backed type insulation in the floors? Is it standard 1/2" jute padding throughout over the mat? My intent is to have a quieter, cooler floor than original, but I am not freaking out about trying to achieve any extreme results.

Thanks!

I checked my 66 bench seat and there are no welds and rivets on mine, somebody must have cobbled up your seat pedestals. I have heard of problems with mega mat/ultra mat and the jute backing on the carpet, it ends up being to thick causing installation problems with the carpet. I just used fatmat with the jute padding and it worked out fine. Hope that helps

The 67 seat and rails I bought and installed in my 66 are intact and fit perfectly.

I did, however, cut and reweld the prior set of non Chevelle bucket seat tracks as you describe, so you may have rails from another car.
