I want to send a shout out to Chris Straub and Straub Technologies Inc.
I just rebuilt this 72 454 with Chris's BBC Retro 288/300 hydraulic roller cam. This is the easiest new engine start I've had. Started right up on the second try (first try didn't have any gas in the carb). Thanks Chris for the great service and support.
The engine previously have a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 280/286 solid lifter roller cam. I could never get it to idle good below 1100 rpm and lots of timing. The Straub cam idles perfectly at 700 rpm with 18 deg initial timing.
Here are a couple videos. The first video is the first start. The second is after break-in and tuning with open headers.
