Hello! I’m new to these forums and hope I can get a little information. I’m looking at a 1970 Chevelle SS but have a problem. The car was originally a 396 SS but at some point the engine was supposedly replaced with a 454.

The car still has all the original 396 markings/badges/decals so I figured I would get some information off the engine and look it up. All I can find at this time is a number on the lip in front of the passenger side head and it reads "T6S502662".

I was under the impression that Chevy Big Blocks had the ID stamp in this location but obviously this number isn’t a Chevy number or even in a Chevy format. This leads me to believe that this is perhaps a crate engine. Has anyone seen an engine or crate engine maker that uses markings like this?

Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you very much!!!

Welcome to TC.
You have the partial VIN from the vehicle it came out of.
T = GMC
6 = 1976
S = St.Louis
502662 is the assembly plant sequence number.

Now look on the front of the block above the timing chain cover for the engine id code.

Thanks for the quick reply! I’ll take a look at the I.D code above the timing chain out of curiosity, but I’m pretty sure I’ll pass on this car. I’m pretty sure a 76 engine is going to be really short on horsepower (250 at most I believe). The going price is pretty steep (to me) for an underpowered Chevelle.
