I have never been confident of finding TDC by putting my finger in the #1 plug hole - call it a phobia or whatever. I always pull the driver valve cover and rotate the motor until I see the #1 intake rocker move, keeping an eye for the #1 intake to start to close. When the intake closes, continue to rotate until you get the timing mark to where you want it for initial timing. THen install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 plug wire.
