According to some numbers I came accross from the Chevy Chevelle Number Guide it lists Tonawonda total MkIV 396 engine production installed for Chevelles at 87,057 (and total MkIV 396 engines produced of 87,909). They have the total number of engines that equals the total number of cars produced and specify 86,507 Supersports.

The inference is that there would have been 750 non-SS cars produced with a MkIV 396 (assume it would only have been an L-35). Is this correct? Where they installed in 4 dr police cars, station wagons, non-SS El Caminos...what?

I thought of service replacements in my numbers. As far as I can tell, there were:
86,307 SuperSports produced in 1969
87,057 396 engines installed in 1969 A body vehicles
87,909 396 engines produced for A body vehicles in 1969

So, 750 more cars produced with 396 than SS's built.
and 852 more engines produced than cars with 396.
At least that's what this reference book has.
It was odd to me, that's why I'm asking.
