Hi Gang

This is my first post, I have always love Chevys. I recently came across a 1968 Chevelle Convertible SS with a 396. I am sure it is an SS, with everything there, but it will need a full restoration. This cas is interesting, because of the lack of options. It has no power sterring, no disk brakes, no AC. It is a plane Jane. The vin tags and the motor is a match. It will start and does not smoke, with 82000 miles on it. The frames so far shows only a bad spot on the left front near the steering. It looks like it can be patched. It will need both fender, lower quarters, door skins, firewall panel, floor pans, truck pans and a new top. Here is the big question for $8000 would you save it or let it go? Additionally, how much do you think a fair body shop would charge to get it read for paint.

First off, welcome aboard:).

These questions get asked often, and the usual responses are usually " The car is worth what someone is willing to pay "

It sounds like it's pretty rough, but if it's a true SS and a ragtop, it certainly makes the prospect of saving it something to ponder. $8000 sounds like alot, but it's been awhile since I've been in the market.

As far as the bodywork, with all the sheetmetal work you say it's going to need, I'm thinking you're looking in the neighbourhood of $20,000 for the body to be done properly and have a nice paint job.

Welcome aboard here also, Dans on the money on his estimate, but its like a 40 year old house, once you remodel the bathroom, thats just the begining.

Welcome!

Based on the limited info, no pics etc. I would say it's close to $8K but it's hard to say. Their worth saving, it just depends on what your plans are. Are you going to keep it or sell it? They only made 2394 of these cars. IMO their somewhat rare, but what makes them desireable is that their convertibles.

Having a #'s matching car helps in value but there are alot of other factors that need to be considered as well.

Being able to do the work yourself is a big plus. You can count on at least another 8K plus if you turn it over to a body shop. And that's all dependent on the scope.

Get me some more info and the vin and I'll check it againist my personal resistry on these cars.

assume there is a "138" in the VIN, 65-68 cars have that. If it is what you say it is something like that certainly would be worth keeping together versus parting out. Might really want to examine the frame problems you mentioned, could be a can of worms if you are not ready or financially able to undertake a frame off and project of that magnitude.

The VIN is 13867. The block is coded T01I0ET B?? and last numbers of the VIN which end with 3239. All bows are with the top. The interior is all there except for the front bench seat. I would like to put bucket in the car. I am think about making the my first project. I took a couple of paint and welding classes. However, as with most people, I am a fraid of the unknown.

Thanks Animal69

This is the information, I used assist in comfirming the car is a true SS. It was not hard with this information and with the original paint and engine. I am still kind of taken back their appears to be orange looking primer under the black paint, I hope this is standard for Chevy's. This site has a wealth of information. I have pulled the trigger on the car. It will be my first project car. I will attempt to do the work myself. I have all of the equipment, I have been purchasing it for my workshop upon my retirement. I guess I will start using it earlier.

I just found an old post from Jul 4th, 2008, about the car. The is a ton of photos. This car when from $25K, then down to $19K, then $15K and he took a quick offer of $8K from me. I decided to redo this car myself because you can almost get every panel needed for the car. I am determine to finish the project. It will be a frame off and I have not set any time frame for completion.

well if that's the case I probably already have info. on the car. Sounds like the one in Long Island. Black, and one major project. Was on Hemmings and ebay for at least a year. $8k was probably alittle high but still a good deal.

Again, congrads! Alot of great people on this site willing to help! All you have to do is ask.

You want to be sure to brace the inside of the body before you start striping the car down and removing the body and panels.
