I have a 1967 Chevelle big block 427 aluminum heads. 700R4 trans. It appears that the motor mounts were small block and not replaced. I have been told that did not matter but for the headers it appears to be the case. I have looked and what I see is the problem is that they make generic headers that fit allegedly a large range of cars and years. The problem also is the steering column the headers have to be abused to get them in the car I have 13/4 square port or rectangular port I don't know what they are really called heads. Does anyone have any suggestions I would prefer not to have to change motor mounts and or cut holes in my fender well. also how important is the big block mounts do I need to change them

I put these on my BBC with Alum Heads
Hooker Headers 2455-1, Hooker Headers Competition Headers Chevy/GM Car | Hooker Headers
see Spec Tab info

Had to dent one tube for the Steering shaft a little only
make sure you use a good exhaust gasket Remflex # 2003 is what I used
and it provided a great seal / no leaks

I had the SBC motor and Frame mounts originally which made the BBC sit higher
later put in the correct BBC mounts for the motor and frame
which is what is recommended in the Headers Details Tab

I use the Hedman 2" headers on my 66 Chevelle with a 468 and merlin iron heads. I had to dent one of the tubes at the steering shaft because my heads have raised exhaust ports. A few of the spark plugs are a PITA to access, but it's not terrible.

Both post give you 2" info. Headman elite 68198 1 3/4, work with my raised port heads with no denting, just a Lille grinding on the corner of the pass side Lower A arm. Plugs are also tough to get at. Shortened, a 5/8 plug socket, grinded it open, and I can get all plugs easy by putting a wrench on it.

A lot of companies do specify you need the correct motor mounts as the SB ones I believe place the motor a little higher. You could probably get by with a 1 7/8 header (not sure how much power you have) which could help. If you say you have aluminum heads what brand? As many of them have raised exhaust ports which just further complicates the problem with the too tall motor mounts.

get a set of chassi headers for your application. not generic.
perhaps hooker / hedman.
the 700 R4 wont live long behind a big block. expect problems

Try "Onion headers" they are made specifically for your and and engine size

Yup, very old thread….but for the sake of correcting mis-information, on a 67 Chevelle small block mounts and frame stands can be used on a bbc with no change in height or engine location. Small block mounts can be used with big block frame stands with no change in height or location. Also, when using aluminum heads, it’s important to know if they have raised exhaust ports, as this will screw up just about every “stock” header configuration on a 64-67 Chevelle. Fitment is critical since space is a premium.
