Has anyone modified the console lid by installing cup holders. Let’s see what you have done, what parts how’s it look. It’s crazy to think that the factory had no plans for cup holders.

Here is a little project I did for my 69 console. Might be able to do something similar. Big advantage is no mods to console.

I also though about inside the console, I don't really use it for anything anyway but then there is having to have the lid open all the time. But what if I used a hole saw into the lid and installing a couple of drop in cup holders, probably could not open the console lid but as I said I don't use it anyway. Just seeing if anyone else has done something similar, trying not to re-invent the wheel.

So the lid is open when driving the car. No big deal. Dont know about you but when i get where im going i remove my coffee or beverage and get out of the car. The n close the lid. The container is empty before I drive again so it can go anywhere. Usually in the trunk. No offense but a beautiful console with a couple holes cut in it and stainless cup holders showing looks bad.

I would not even think of Cutting up that Original Console

I just took a piece of 5/4 #1 pine and cut it so it fit right in the front of the console with the door open.I cut it so it fit tight to the side's and cut a hole in it so my coffee cup would fit in there with the lid open. That was with my 71's console but a 66's console is about the same width as a 71's is.
It's only visible with the lid open and only works with the lid open too.I would never cut up a good console for a cup holder.
Anyone remember those plastic cupholders that would hang off the door or the window that would let stuff spill all over the place ?

Another option would be to make one that fits on the area between the shifter and the seat. A saddle kind of thing. Of course the underside would have to be some kind of soft material as not to scratch your console. Then you could install as needed ( pain in the ass IMO) and just remove if not needed. Still more convenient to just raise storage lid and have holder already in place.

FWIW..A thought...go to Amazon and type in "auto waste baskets", it shows car waste baskets in different sizes that will go over the hump (for those of us with no console). Get your cupholder(s) set in place and use NON-EXpanding window / insulating foam to put them in place permanently. The foam can be worked somewhat after it dries if you need to customize your set up.

How about something like this. When not being used it could be put in the storage bin. Available at amazon also.

How about not eating and drinking while we drive our classic cars?

Funny how we've "evolved"..... back in the day cup holders were not even designed into these car interiors, but today every car has these provisions. And my son makes a living from detailing cars and removing all the spills and droppings inside customers daily driver cars.

Personally - with the time and effort I spent making my Chevelle new again; there'll be no eatin' & drinkin' in this ride!

the evolution... When is the last time you saw an ash tray of cigarette lighter in a new car. I recall 10-12 years ago, I could order a retrofit from the parts department for my "new" car... I wonder if that's even an option for most people... Funny, because I still see a lot of people smoking...

I drink a lot of water, especially on a longer drive, like 1-2 hours, so I am not really worried about spilling a little... Luckily mine will be factory buckets with no console, so I'll get one of those "hump Huggers". I'll throw it in the trunk once I get where I am going.

Raider,
I think you missed the mark big time on this ^^^^. Eating and drinking inside these classic cars was very much a part of their history and even before these cars were built. Many glove box doors were made with recessed areas to set drinks on. What about the era of the drive in restaurant which was in full force from the 50's through the end of the 70's such as depicted in one of the biggest movies featuring this era, American Graffitti.
If you dont allow any consumption in your car that is your call. If one is a slob then they are a slob and most likely drop food and spill drinks in their home without cleanng it. I have been consuming in my cars for years without any problems because I am not a slob. The slob offers your son job security.

Back when these were designed drinks were much smaller. The 32 oz guzzler had not been dreamed up yet. That wasnt invented till someone figured out by adding 10 cents worth of ingredients they could charge an extra dollar. Now its the norm.
Yes I agree the glove box door recesses were intentioned for stationary beverage consumption. Actually one of the first aftermarket cup holders I recall was nothing more than a bean bag that one set on the trans tunnel with a metal cup incorporated into it.

Hi blm. I don't think I missed the mark so much. Yes, eating in our parked cars has always been there as you say, but not while driving in my opinion. Those recesses on the glovebox door were there as a suggestion to utilize the door when parked. No way do they do anything to help while moving. I think those old JC Whitney plastic drink holders that clipped onto our doors were the start of the ability to drink while driving. Followed by those coffee cups with the big broad base to stabilize the cup on a surface. Todays cars always come with cup holders so you can drink and drive and not spill the drink...... something we did not see in the sixties. Unless you were in a limo :)

Today you see people eating and drinking and talking on their phones (let alone texting) and putting on makeup or electric shaving while driving...... signs of how we have "evolved"....
