Ive got my 12 bolt apart for a posi upgrade and new axles plan to reuse the Richmond 4:30 R&P The pattern is a bit off I think ?? I checked the pinion depth with a T&D depth checker tool and found the actual depth @ 2.770 Target number on pinion 2.762 When I installed yrs back I had a home made checker tool not the most accurate pattern looked ok to me when I did it it was quiet for a few yrs but last season had mild howl on deceleration

I know most would say to put back used gears exactly as they came out do you think I would hurt anything by adding shims to get it to target number assume that would move the pattern down a bit ?? car does see the track with 1,40 or better 60' manual trans car launch at 4500-5k

Only other issue was backlash had opened so plan to reshim to get it too .010

MANY, MANY years ago I bought a pinion depth tool (before then, I strictly went by the contact pattern). I used the tool 2-3 times, but it back in the box---------------it's still there.
I have returned to setting my rears only by the contact pattern. A LOT of the rears I do are with used gears. I'm of the opinion that pinion depth specs are worthless with used gears, only the pattern tell the true setting. And YA, YA, YA, YA, YA, maybe my method requires tear down 3-4 times, but when I'm done, it's whisper quiet. Besides, since I'm retired, I got nothin' better to do.
Also, with used gears, it may be impossible to get a textbook pattern. So I set it up until I get what looks like an acceptable pattern, then tear it down again, add .002-.003 shim and check it again. If that causes the pattern go go the other way, then I know what I had before adding the extra shims was the best I was gonna get.
By the way, while I'm on the subject of setting up rears, I MUST give Freddie Byars (Big Gear Head) and Lionel and Chevelles (Tory) lots of credit for assembly tips.

Ya I know pattern is the final guideline I just used the checker to see where it was before I took it apart I think the pattern could be better ?? its a full contact not sure if my picture good enough to see would like opinions on the pattern
