I have a 72 malibu with the original open 10 bolt rear and i plan on rebuilding it in the near future. Im not sure if it is an 8.2 or a 8.5 inch rear. Also if it is an 8.2 is it possible to convert it to an 8.5, what parts would be needed to convert if possible. Any input would help.

The '72 Chevelle should have the 8.2 10 bolt. Check the pinion nut, if it is a 1 1/8 then it is the 8.2 and if it is 1 1/4 then it is the 8.5. A '72 Olds Cutlass should have a 8.5 that will bolt into your Chevelle.

thanks for the info. as far as the 72 cutlass rear will there be any adjustments to be made or will this be close to a straight swap.

The only thing I know of would be some adjustments to the drive shaft. The u joint may be different and the drive shaft may be about 1 inch too long.
