It's not a crossmember, it's a trans pan gaurd! I think farmers have a tendency to overengineer things, at least me anyways. I do have to say though, for my exhaust, I love my MIG welder!! Good ol Lincoln cracker box works great with the 6013's for frankenmember...

If you were a bus engineer instead of a farmer, that thing would have been made with 1/2 inch plate steel. 120 lbs instead of 26.

The stock one did not provide enough clearance for the headpipes for my taste. I would have had to crimp them halfway shut to make it under the stock member. I do have it painted, but the only thing left to do is fab/attach the E brake cable guide. Schurkey, that is 1/2 plate for the "cutouts". I really am surprised it was not heavier.

:clonk: Nice fab job. I am curious, is this necessary for many 68-72 Chevelles, I am still piecing my 68 together and hadn't figured on changing crossmember. Was original 307, now 454 with flotech headers. Do you reckon stock c-member will still work. My farmer welds don't look nearly as good as yours. Maybe I could use 2X4's and plywood instead?

Out66cast,
Well, from what I've seen, some folks don't have any issues even with 3" headpipes. I think it will probably be a see what ya got when you get there kind of thing. I also think that my hooker super comp headers are spaced farther away from each other(at the collector) than other brands. Be sure to use stainless lag bolts and treated 2X4's!!

Man, those fab/welding skilz are going to give farmer's a bad name! Now everybody's going to be stopping at the house, expecting the same.

Actually a very nice looking job man. You'll like the fab'd crossmember much better than beating up the old one!
