I've got a friend building a 468 motor for me. He thinks the cam is too small for my application.
I'm running a bored out .60 over 454 with 10.25 to 1 compression. A set of Merlin iron cylinder heads, RPM air gap intake, 800 Barry Grant mechanical secondary carb, 2 inch primary headers, and Crane gold roller rockers. The cam I've chosen is a Comp cam extreme energy, 284/296 duration and 574/578 lift.
The car is mainly used for cruise nights and an occasional trip down the track. The engine is going in a back halved '69 Camaro with 31 x 15 inch tires, 4.88 9 inch detroit locker rear and a M21 4 speed.

I am hoping to be anywhere in the 11's with it. Do you think this time is realistic?

Do you think this is a bad cam choice? Keep in mind that it has to be a streetable car more than a race car.

Very interested in this thread. I just installed the same cam in my 454. Have not ran it yet though. I was told by Comp that it is a "middle of the road cam" for a BBC. I think it will work for you though. I think (been told) that 11's are very realistic yet streetable. I think WE will like it. (I hope).

Thats a decent cam for a 468 on the street with like 331-355 gear but with 488's it will rpm out quickly.

You say the car will be manily a saturday night cruiser and will only see an accassional pass on the strip,in that case i would get rid of the 488's for the street unless you like to cruise at approx 4500 rpms @ 60mph.

If your bent on the 488's then you definatley need more cam esp for your occassional romp down the strip.

But since its a 95% street cruiser with plenty of grunt (468BC) i would opt for keeping the cam you have or at most go up i more step in profile and replace the VERY STREET UNFRIENDLY 488's with somewhere between 331-355 gear max for the street which would perf great with your 468.

Again,i am going on the fact you said it would only see the strip on occassion and it was mainly a street cruiser and i am just wodering why you would even condire the crazy 488's for the street?

he's got 31 in tires on it, so the 4.88's will act like a 4.11. I run 4.56 with 28 in tires and 60 is about 3200 or so, which in iowa isn't bad cause the speed limit is only 55 on 2 lane roads. I would go with a bigger cam, something with over 600 lift and around 240@.05 duration so you have enuff rpm to use.

I had 4.11's in it with a mild 396 and I could cross the finish line in 3rd gear so the .88's work well with the 31 inch tire. With the .88's it's around 5200 RPM in 4th gear going across the line. The car also was only running 13.80's. That 396 is going in my '69 Chevelle and I'm going to store the original motor away as to not hurt it.
BTW, the cam that's going in is advertised as 240/246 at .50. The rpm range listed is 2300-6500. The next step up cam is 2800-7000. I don't need to see 7000 RPM. More chances of breaking something especially with the 4 speed.

I wouldn't say it is the "wrong" cam for your application. You could always go bigger, but it is a trade off. If it will see serious street time i would prefer to be on the smaller side of what would work. Sure, a .600"+ cam will work, and probably make more power, but you will likely sacrifice drivability, and reliability, especially idleing around on cruise nights. You will also be much more likely to have valve to piston clearance problems. That being said, a little bigger cam would probably not be a bad decision, but don't go overboard. Yes, you should be able to run 11's easily with the cam you chose.

well I have about the same motor and run a 502a4 solid roller specs are 660 257-264@.05 110 lsa and I drive it all over and the idle ,well, it is just wicked and says you mess with me you are gonna go down lol Also why run a comp cam? I would get a ultradyne or a new voodoo, ask for udharold and get the best there is.

that combo will be good are the heads rectangle port??? that is a fairly large cam for hyd. it sounds to me like you would have been better off with a roller. if your looking for decent timeslips out of it. but the cam you have will work fine.

Interesting. I chose the same cam for my 496. Haven't bought it yet, so I guess I will look a little closer at the Voodoo. I looked at them first, but kinda drifted away for some reason.

Mines a 95% streeter with some track time.

And it looks like you lost. ;) The Voodoo's do a much better job at mid lift.
Are you referring to the Voodo 60205 cam? If that is the case, then I don't have enough compression, gearing, or stall.

I ordered the 294/306, 588/593 comp cam today. I may make a last minute cam change decision. Does anyone have any feedback on this cam? I'll end up with a spare cam but I'd rather install the best choice and only do it once.
