This happens every time I close the hood on the drivers side.Passenger side used to do it somewhat, but I adjusted it down and its good now.
But the drivers side is out of adjustment, and it still does it.I have to push it down by hand to get it to look right.
The rivets appear fine, and there appears to be no excess slop in the hinge.
These are,to the best of my knowledge, the original,62,000 mile hinges on the car.
So,what goes bad in the hinge?
(all panels,and gaps look good/original)

Usually this issue is caused from using hinges that are worn out in the hinge pin area. Either the pins are worn or the holes are elongated.

Spring tension causes the hinge to flex, the extra movement of the worn out pins or holes ends up lifting the hood at the rear.

Yeah,I know,I was just wanting to keep it within its designed specs.
I already adjusted the hinge as far as it would go,the next step being the shim(which Im not a fan),and elongation of the holes.
I was just curious as to the actual problem that developed.
I had received a bid on rebuilding the hinges, but its more than I can spend on that right now.I realize a full rebuild would cure the problem,I was just trying to target it,and see if it was something I could fix.

It doesn't take much wear for this problem to occur, just a tiny bit of slop in the hinge pivots will do it, the spring tension does the rest.

I ended up using Eddie Motor Sports hinges to eliminate the free play in the stock type hinges.

Kind of what I thought.Ill have to tough it out for awhile then, lol.
Ive heard the repro hinges arent too good.

Have you tried lubing the rivets in the joints and on the backs of the rivets? I use Sea Foam Deep Creep, and it does wonders on them, as I believe it would help the hinge seat better. Every-time you push down on the back of the hood, you actually bend the hinge, so be careful.

Thanks Willie,
Ill check that out.I didnt know I might be causing more damage to it each time I forced it down.

When we put the new hood on my 69 it looked just like yours. We adjusted and adjusted and just couldn't get the fit right. My hinges looked and felt tight. I reluctantly sent the hood hinges off to Willie to have them rebuilt. Got them back in a week and the hood fit perfect after the rebuilt hinges were installed. I couldn't believe the hinges were worn that bad. The cost was around $175 with the correct color coating.

I didn't want to spend big bucks on hinges so I got golden legion. Low cost and there an exact match to my original ones and probably most important they work good. I could get two more sets and it would still be less than having them rebuilt

I was going to buy repo's until I read a few stories about them breaking.

Jyags.... I wasn't so lucky when my repros blewout. Dinged up the paint pretty good on the hood and fender. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for GM hinges. They are much better quality... Search on member MARTINSR. He has some good tips on hood alignment. Have fun getting that hood lined back up. ;-)

Yank the springs and check for play. I send all my original hinges to Willie. I will not put repro hinges on my cars and my customers do not want them either. HoodHingeRepair.com Hood adjustment is a piece of cake with good hinges. The quality of superior components and fine craftsmanship will not be met by reproduction hinges.

Small update.
Thanks Willie for the penetrant suggestion.
I couldnt find the deep creep locally(although the stores online data said it was IN STORE,lol)so I used a liquid wrench spray, and really just half assed sprayed it in all the rivot points.
It took half of the raise out of the back.
So,Ill try in a few to completely remove the hinges, thoroughly clean them, and re lube.
And 65chevelle300post-I hope thats not what it is in this case, but thanks for the heads up.

That's what mine were doing, before the pin finally broke...buggered up the paint on the corners of the hood. The PO had used the crap repop hinges. I replaced them with GM hinges. Yeah, they were pricey, but what is your paint job worth ?? Send your originals to Willy, or replace with GM hinges...

My original hinges still do this on occasion - i've learned to live with it and nestle the hood down gently when it needs it as I wont bother with repops.

The expensive after market hinges with the sealed bearings will prevent this problem from occurring.
