I have a 69 chevelle and the engine won't start. Here is some info:
previous owner swapped in a 400ci engine(don't know any more about it)
I have tried 3 different starters, two batteries and it still won't fire up.
When I turn the key, it clicks like the battery is dead, and the starter pinion locks up with the flywheel. I have tried shimming the starter a couple different ways. I removed the spark plugs, and the engine would turn over. And lastly, after sitting for so long, there was water in the cylenders, so I turned the engine by hand to flush it out. SO, after all this, it won't start. anybody have any tips. It is a faily new motor, so a rebuilt seems too soon.
Thanks,
Jake

Well, if these is water in it it might have rusted up, but you said it will turn by hand... Maybe try turning it a few more times and squirt a tad of oil into each cylinder to make things a little smoother. Will the starter kick the motor over with the plugs removed also? Is it a high compression motor and you need a bigger starter? Just a couple of ideas...

Water in the cylinders? Oh no. Itouldbe anything from bad plugs to valves that have rusted and wont seal. Pull the plugs and do a compression check. The motor wont be warm so the data wont be good, but look for a really weak cylinder.
