I've about given up on my cars air conditioning. First, I had to replace the blower motor, now the upper vent isn't working right and to top it off, the air stopped blowing cold anyways. How much power and gas mileage is the air conditioning sapping when its off? I'm wondering if I should just pull it all out or just leave it in the car.

I think you're asking how much horsepower it takes to turn the A/C belt(s) on the pulley bearing while the compressor clutch is not engaged. Is that right?

The answer would be "almost none". I bet the weight of the compressor makes as much difference as the drag of the belts 'n' bearing. And if those belts also run the alternator or PS pump, the belt drag won't change much if you would remove the compressor.

If you gut the system on a street car, you're pretty much guaranteed to regret it someday. I did. So did my buddies.

Get it fixed so it works right, or pull the electrical connector off the clutch, but don't open up the system. You minimize contamination that way.

When I bought my car the compresser was in a box. When I wanted to change plugs, number 8 was VERY hard to get out. Myself, I don't care about AC. So I removed the AC box on the firewall and installed an AC delete cover in its place. # 8 plug a breeze to remove. I'm happy. 100 degree weather I'm not out in the car anyway

I CANNOT and I WILL NOT tell you what you should do. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT if it was my car, I'd do whatever was necessary to put the AC in perfect working condition.
If I needed the power for drag racing, I wouldn't be building a drag car from a nice street car with factory air. I'd be building a drag car from a non-air car that was less desireable as a street car. If it's 100+ or 85deg in my Chevelle conv, the AC is ON and blowing on hi. I prefer to be comfortable rather than to be LOOKING cool.
Actually, I think it looks cool to be driving along in the hot weather with all the windows rolled up instead of driving along, sweating and being uncomfortable.
Oh ya, I have a soap box I'll sell cheap.
