This morning I garaged the El Camino, it was 27 and lots of black ice on the roads. Tonight we're supposed to get snow, so I'm driving the Explorer for a while and let the EC rest. Meanwhile I get a call from my son that one of the neighbor's trees fell and took out 15' of the side fence. It just missed my pond and waterfall, but now I'll have to do some temporary fencing to keep the dogs in when I get home. Of course it will be dark and cold out.

Hey Joe,

Go to Home Depot and buy a roll of that rollout fencing and staplegun that bad boy to the posts 'til the weekend. Should take about 5 min.

Thanks Alan, I go right by one on the way home. I was thinking take home some wood from the shop but that's a lot easier.

All the above are the reasons I live in Georgia! After 23 years in Minnesota I got so tired of cold and snow I went south for the winter and never went back.
Ditto, but I moved from Kansas to Texas. It was 77 here yesterday. Typically never gets cold enough to wear a hat and gloves like it does in the North. I really do not miss the cold... The temporary fencing is a great suggestion. Since it was your neighbor's tree you should ask him to put up the temp. fence for you. Just think, you could stand at the window with a cup of coffee or.. and watch him freeze for awhile.

Joe,
Just re-read your first post. If you lost 15' of fence you probably lost at least one post on your fence. You may need to spear a pole or two into the ground to lash that temporary fence onto (maybe use zip-ties)...

Then there are those of us that can't take the heat, but love to snowmobile, downhill ski, play hockey, sled, tube, in the snow. I'm not a real heavy guy either, I'm just 180 lbs. For me, winter is the second best time of the year, (not that I like having the Chevelle off the road). Every time I get called to go down south, as soon as I get there my glasses fog up as soon as I put them on. Then at most plants in the south, I get to put on the Flame resistant suits, and that kills me even more. After about five days of heat in the south, I finally get use to it, then I get to go back home to 15 degree weather (or colder). If NY never got above 75 F, that would be just fine by me. You guys in the South, how in the heck do you handle that heat and humidity?

Fred.

I've read up on the winterizing tips for keeping the Velle in an unheated garage during the cold months (all but August in Mich), and somehow I get the feeling that no matter what I do, the car will be a rusted, mouse infested pile of crap come Spring.

talked to my nephew in michigan over the weekend. he just got done shoveling snow, my wife just got done running the mower over the lawn. okay it was mostly to get up the leaves but still it was 70 degrees......and i love it. fall, winter and spring is a great time down here.....dont ask me about summer.

Phil,

That is why I have a small piece of rat posion next to each tire. Never had a rat get into the car, and don't expect to see any piles of crap next year either. My garage is locked, except when I'm in it. So I don't have to worry about killing the local cats, etc.

Our big snowstorm fizzled, there was maybe 1/2" this morning. As for the fence, I got some of that green platic fence and a couple of green steel stakes, but when I got home the neighbor had already removed the tree and put 3' high wire up. With my stuff I was able to get up up to 6' to secure the dogs. It was a 12" Diameter alder that fell, so he'll have some firewood. He says he'll fix the fence by the weekend. It was just an 8 foot section that was destroyed. Oh, and the waterfall doesn't freeze until it's been in the 20s for several days, then I unplug it. So far no ice on the pond, though last year it got to 3" of ice at one time.

I went out ice fishing the other day. Its been snowing all night and going to be cold all week like below 15. Hey anybody know where I can buy a small wood stove for my spearhouse? I looked on the internet and they are all expensive.

Back in the early 80s I bought a pot-bellied stove that heated our garage conversion. Unfortunately now most states have made it illegal to sell any woodstove that is not up to EPA standards, the cost of meeting that are going to drive up the price. Your best bet is to find a garage sale or flea market where someone is selling an old small one that will work fine for what you need. My parents have a really efficient new stove in their house that cost $1,200 but in their huge garage/workshop they have an older one that they use all winter long, but it came with the place. As people upgrade they have to do something with their old ones. Maybe even try local used building materials yards.
