I had one of those, silver black vinyl top, 350HP 400, 4 spd. very nice original car.

Hope it works out for you but that ad really sucks. One pic and a quote on what a number 4 car is described as looking like. For 15k if expect better than fair condition but then I don't know what that car is really worth could be rare I guess

The info I got via email: "Engine is a 400. Not original paint and needs to be painted"

So I'll have to just look it over real good. If it has any rot anywhere, then it is not worth $15k. It would have to be a perfectly solid original sheet metal body to go for that IMO.

Anyone experienced with Pontiac VIN stampings on the engine/trans? Hopefully I can at least see those. If it's not numbers matching, then that would knock the price down too I imagine.

I guess the only thing I wish is that the car was a 1968, as that is my favorite year GTO.

I never understood the numbering system when it comes to rating a classic. They don't even address the numbers thing, whether it has original motor, trans, rear, etc. or is that assuming it's 100% original. If so, it's been misquoted and misused more times than not.

I'd be more worried about a seller that throws out NADA pricing, and states "I know what it's worth". This might be from a seller that doesn't know much about cars, think a relative clearing an estate, and is trying to be honest. Not likely, but it's worth a look if the car is local.

I did find the ad to be weird. In all the contact via email, it seems I can only talk to "the wife", who doesn't know anything about the car... I don't know if this is an older guy who doesn't like to use email or what, no cell number listed, no texting etc.

It's only a 20 min drive from where I work, meeting in a local fast food parking lot and not at a home. So it does seem like this CL seller is following some safety protocol. I've been disappointed in every car I have looked at so far, we'll see what this inspection brings. It has been painted once, looks to be an old paint job, those are usually the ones that are typically fiberglass and bondo right over rot holes. We'll see...

I asked for more pictures, this is all I got: http://imgur.com/a/7jKpJ#0

Three seat pics... sigh

even if the car is a little bit of a bondo buggy here and there, chances are you won't find another 1970 4 speed GTO driver for that price. As long as the frame/floors are solid.
VIN # will be stamped along the timing cover on passenger side of the block,as I mentioned in the other thread.

If this car is anything like that Sun Coupe I looked at, I could not bring myself to pay $15k for that bondo job... That Skylark would have needed both quarter skins, full trunk pans, inner and outer wheel houses, trunk extensions, rear fender parch panels both sides, and door skins as rust was popping out of the lower pinch seams on both doors. If I have to replace all of that to make the body right, I feel that is a project car worth $4000, not $11,000.

However, I understand the real GTO 4 speed bit...

Looking at the TRIM & VIN tags, it's a real GTO, they don't look messed with as far as retagging.

Owner said nothing about #'s matching, I tried to verify but tbh I lost interest looking at all the rot on the body.

The interior was so/so, dash pad trashed ofc, beyond repair I think, not even for Just Dashes etc. Owner put some aftermarket dash cap on it that promptly melted in the sun and is heaving up like 3 inches.

The body would need:

RH & LH trunk pans
RH & LH trunk extensions
Inner & Outer wheel houses both sides
Full quarters both sides
RH inner & outer rockers
Both fenders need lower patches
Various floor patches (I'd just do a full floor pan with brace)
The endura front bumper was a stress cracked disaster
Rear valence was missing

I didn't even ask him to start the car.

The last 3 guys I talked to ('72 sun coupe, '68 Chevelle, and this '70 GTO) seemed like really good guys, no BS'ing salesman talk, real honest. However they are so way off on the asking prices, I'm wanting to give up looking.

I value the car at $7500 tops (if it is #'s matching), only because it is a real GTO 4 spd bucket car. If it was a bench seat auto on the column Tempest in the same condition, $3500.

I buy and sell every week... all different things. mainly, yard sales on the weekend...
There's something going on with people. They are educating themselves, but, its the wrong way.

People are going on ebay, searching for their item and seeing what the items are listed at.... then they think there's are equal or near that price.

When encounter these people, I ask them to look at "completed" and "sold".

It paints a much lower estimate.

Ebay, BJ, Mecum, right away theirs is of the same quality as one professionally restored.

Yep, this is highly frustrating...
