It doesn't sound like a governor related problem. if it was it wouldn't matter if he manual or auto shifted.
If it is shifting to late while in auto, it will also shift too late manually IF governor related.

and on to the problem at hand my dish a matic thubo thrush 2000 whipple grinder powered by a whoopie cushion injection will rule on you all . HA HA HA HA JUST KIDDING TENSION BREAKER. now now guys play nice . it sometimes take others longer to explain or understand a concept than some . like my 2 cents matters.

Whew it was getting HOT in here, glad to see you guys didn't beat up Chirp too bad..... :D :D

Maybe the shift problem stems from the infamous burnout video
???? LOL

Man, I'll say the same thing .. you really gotta lose the 'tude! Especially when asking for advise, and especially over the 'net.

Shifting fine in 'D' .. and then delayed in manual shifting, makes me think of the shifter linkage or worn tranny detents.

Are you on a column shifter? If so, what kind of shape is the round bushing on the column shifter arm? The other one I see a lot of, is worn tranny detents ... you know the one where you can shift all gears, without even pulling the arm towards you (most older cars seem to suffer from this).

Now I ain't anywhere near the experts of some of these other guys ... I know the bushing can be replaced pretty easily. The detents, I can't remember if they can be replaced from the outside or not.

Oh, by the way, on the governor tune-ups ... they work kind of like the mechanical advance in your distributor (if you've ever seen that). Weight/springs can be adjusted to hit a predetermined shift rpm every time. I believe most stock trannies are like 4400rpm in 'D' ... and you can make it shift anywhere, with the correct combination of weight/springs.

I have no idea what your talking to, not an attitude at all on either side, remember its the internet, you can't tell emotions so you must not make assumptions :p

I'm just messing around, because he clearly said one thing and than clearly denied it, nothing more, nothing less, the *cough* was the big sarcasm hint dude.

But I think your attitude is worse, I'm not hte only one with the issue and your post helps noone, thats why people get frustrated and you see 5 topics on the same issue every month, because someone knows but doesn't bother to answer.

Ah, now this will escalate, people will scream, and we will be back at our starting point, see what happens when you make a post like that, if you had a question about my stance in this topic you use the private message feature to personally contact me and deal with it, as i would expect hoffbug to do if he felt offended, but what do I know, i've only been a member of 5-6 forums for 5+ years a piece. This is what happens when you make a comment on the internet like yours, once again you are makign assumptions about a person you dont know, and you have no idea what experience I have and topics like this go down the hill.

i would like a mod to just close this/delete this topic whatever, if Jacob has an issue he can contact me privately, same with hoffbug, if jacob wishes to post a reply contributing an answer to mine and eveyrone elses question in this thread than i'll have no problem deleting this post, as i would expect him to delete his.

The worst thing you can do online is pretend to be the mature one, drop your 2 cents and think your helping, it doesn't work.
I'll respond to this post,
I'm not the only person here to perceive and attitude from your post.
Maybe you meant nothing by it, but since there were no emoticons, it definitely appears so.

Your quote "because someone knows, but doesn't bother to answer".
A problem I see pretty often online is the fact that people EXPECT their question to be answered.
Oftentimes it is obvious they haven't taken time to research their own question, can't post in the proper area, and can't answer questions posed by those TRYING to help them.
I think this is caused by the typical sentiment of Americans today "I want something for nothing". To be given everything free.

There is a REALLY good chance that your question, or parts of it, have been previously answered online. I would even venture to guess they've been answered on this very board, but maybe a search of the "Transmission Topic" would be better than the "Performance" area.
You might even find a wealth of knowledge there with a search under my username. Or Steve Oldani's.
And guess what?
It's all FREE!
That's right, it is there for the taking, just a small investment of YOUR time and energy will answer many of your questions. It may not answer you specific question but it will hopefully arm you with enough info and knowledge that you might be able to self diagnose the car a bit further, give a better explanation of the symptoms, and then ask further questions.

The knowledge shared on these boards is immense. There are often many thousands of years of experience at your fingertips but you must do some legwork to put it to use.
Would you go to a library, and demand a librarian find a book for you, then read it to you?

Many of the guys who post here learned the hard way, with hard spent effort, cash, and frustration. Before the internet existed.
A little bit of respect isn't ALOT to ask.

Maybe I'm just a hard-a$$ but I learned much of what I know the hard way, and I'm not that old.. :)

You're not a hard A$$ Jake, you know your stuff..., how much longer before you come home? I'm curious as to what you find in that other transmission, other than burnt clutches. The manual valve body is apparently what the doctor ordered, so far anyway, hard to tell with only 6 passes on it, gonna make some more tomorrow night. My son and I are going to have a match race, old motor on nitrous against the 505, to date my best is 9.25@ 109 and his 9.30 @ 111 ought to be a good race, also going to try a 1000hp swap (thanks John :waving: ) at the track, hoping for good things :D

Tell us about your transmission..
Does it have a shift kit installed? Who's kit, TRANSGO? what level installed?

Do you have an aftermarket converter. Who's converter, What stall?
Lets see, here's the complete quote and I seem to see the question of what level installed being in there which wasn't anwered and no-where in that signature do I find the converter listed. So, who's arguing what again??

When using internet boards like this, the people answering the questions usually have never actually seen your car. So, when you don't answer their questions back or just expect them to "know" then you're not going to get help. I've posted with a detailed theory with about 6 or 8 things to check and then I get an "all the tests were good" response. Well, my basic feeling at that point is that if everything I posted checks out then it should be working so good day to you. I've tried to write out step by step details to perform the tests and the person either gets ****y or never posts about it again so with a response like that I just don't bother anymore past the first post. The person just seems to want to be told exactly what to do without investing any time or effort and I'm not psychic so I don't just "know" the problem.

I would think the drive clutches are pretty worn

and the governor is sticking

seen that happen many of times after some major burnouts like the ones that have been done by your car

how does the fluid smell

and how about the color

have you dropped the pan

if so does the fluid look like metallic flake

are there clutch pieces laying in the pan

did it run good - then change the fluid and now it doesn't work right

just a few things to check

tranny was rebuilt by the previous owner, we put a shift kit in it, the fluid was clean, no problems, nothign out of place, all was well, it doesn't seem like anything is broken. oh well, ill manage i guess :/

What was being asked is what stage of transgo kit did you put in? There are more than 1

But I also agree with him this could have been pointed out to him without everyone getting there panties in a twist.

I don't believe anybody got their panties in a twist except maybe Chirp...
I noticed he seemed to have an attitude in his post when asked some questions that I thought were pertinent to the diagnosis.

I personally don't read eveyone's Sig line, and I would think missing an item in the signature line would be excusable when the person who missed it is trying to help.

If you were standing face to face with a guy, and told him the problem, and even mentioned you had a TransGo shift kit, and he asked again what kit it had, would you tell him TRANSGO in a smarta$$ manner?
I personally wouldn't if I needed the help. I would be a respectful and attentative as I could be, but maybe that's too much to ask these days.

There were several very good questions asked that he failed to answer, that could help diagnose the problem.

I learned awhile ago, not to help those that won't help themselves.

I think maybe this is a good chance for him to learn how to research and fix the problem on his own or pay to have it done.

Bob,
I'm currently sitting in Kuwait trying to get an earlier flight back to the States with no luck.
London is shut down due to a strike, so the Frankfurt and Amsterdam routes are clogged up.
My luck....
I actually get "lucky" enough to get out of Iraq a couple of days early, and now I'm stuck in Kuwait not getting paid, spending money on a hotel, and nothing to do.
Kuwait, although progressive for a Middle East country, still doesn't really have much excitment.
Then it still makes me a little bit nervous that less than 100 miles away, people would be trying to kill me, and here I can walk around the streets "relatively" safely.
My job is just on the outskirts of Bayji Iraq, and that place is so bad the military doesn't even go in there unless they HAVE to. 4 guys got killed there a couple of days ago.
Military convoys come by with Apache support...
And I'm running around the countryside in a Furd...with nothing more than a small machine gun.

Oh well,
A visit home will be nice. Some time to play, gonna go drag race the 78 Z that has my 505 in it, and probably go see how the 200-4R in my '69 holds up to some dragstrip abuse behind the 427.

If I break them, I'll dragrace the wife's Nissan Xterra :)

If I get a chance I'll tear into that other trans.

just one thing to say to you jake - THANKS
thankyou for serving in our military - I don't much care for the reasons for the war - but - I care about all our troops

God bless Jake and thankyou very much!!

Hey guys,
I appreciate the thanks, but I'm not in the military. I did my time in the military.
I'm working as a private military contractor.
Job is similar, pay is much better :)

The poor guys and gals who do this job in the military deserve the credit. They do it for much less pay, can't just go home when they get tired of it, and have to stay sometimes 18 months without a break.

I get paid well, leave approximately every 90 days, and if I decide it is too stupid, I come home...
and believe me, I assess the the stupidity factor daily....

What I do does still involve some patriotism because I am still supporting the U.S., but I came here mainly for the cash, my reasoning to stay has changed somewhat, but the cash is still a major factor.

I don't deserve nearly the credit the military does.

A quick pic for ya'll,
I think Bob has already seen this one.

I'm the ugly guy, lower front.

wow jake they beat you with an ugly stick didn't they:D

didn't realize you were not a troop
still stay safe when you are there
nasty to hear when contractors get abducted - then they just find the head or body

Tom,
They may have beat me with it, but then they gave it to me, that's what's in my hands :)

So, having skimmed this thread because I didn't want to get drawn into any kind of showdown, perhaps I missed something. Let's see:

1. Three seconds (!!!) difference (0-60 mph) between automatic shifting (slower) and manual shifting (quicker)?

2. You never do hear it shift a second time when you allow it to automatically shift?

3. "The engine doesn't seem to even rev in drive like in manual mode."

Do you have a tach? What are the chances that your trans has a sticky valve-or something- so that when shifting automatically, IT'S NOT ACTUALLY IN FIRST GEAR? I've seen malfunctioning transmissions that will start out in second unless forced into first using the shift lever. If you were starting out in second, the performance would be dogcrap, just like you describe. There'd only be one shift, just like you describe. And the engine wouldn't seem to be revving--just like you describe. But shifting manually, you'd get first gear, everything would work like it's supposed to, and you'd see a tremendous performance gain...just like you describe.

??????????????
